ALLAN, JETIY STREET, DUNEDIN. 19f LEPHANT" BRAND OF WHITE LEAD AND PAINTS. A Prominent Exhibit in the British Court Is the large show case of Messrs ALKXANDIiB.FEUGUSSON, and CO., Lead, Colour, and Paint Manufacturers, of 36 to 43 M'Alpine street, Glasgow, aid "Montreal, Canada, at whose extensive works tha ■complete processes of Lead Smelting, Deeilverising, j Lead Corroding, and Paiiit Manufacture are con■■ducted on the mosteffective methods for the production of the finest maierials. White Lead by the old Dutch process was iktro:nncEP mio Scotland ix 1873 by this fikm, who ARK STILI, THE ONLY MANUFACIUBEBS THERE. In this proeeaa, discovered some 200 years ago, and -which i« also used in all the great centres of the trade in England and elsewhere, the Lead in thin plates, placed ou beds of spent tanners' bark, is exposed to the action of acetic acid, tjie result being the formation of a thin coating of acetateof lead, which is immediately reduced to carbonate of lead by the carIbonio acid wising from the fermsntation of the hark-the naseenj acid again attacking a fresh surface of the lead, the process going ou until the metal is corroded through.' The resulting product, which is o compound of ■Carbonate and Hydrated Oxida of Lead, next undergoes ah elaborate series of washings for purification, and repeated grinding in water under powerful rollers, so ao to produce the most unformly fine state of subdivision or powder, which is quite unique, and possesses qnalitiea which have hitherto baffled the ingenuity of ehurnists and patentees to imitate, Btill less to excel. Like Nature* own methods this pro«ms is slow but sure. The patent processes and substitutes which appear in rapid succession, and whicli .have in view chiefly the cheapening of the cost by reducing the long time required in itß manufacture, •have all hitherto failed in one or other of the properties possessed by White Lead made by tho old JDutch process, which still remains tho best known ■material for the. manufacture of Paint. Part of the show case is devoted to a model of a White Lead Stack in partial illustration of this ■precede, other portions of the case containing samples of Red Lead, Litharge, and primary Colours, Varnishes, &c, suitable for the use of Uaoorators, Cnachbullderi, Shipbuilders, lfailwftto, Traowars, and In Potteries. This old-established and eminent Scotch firm besides having large operations in Great Britain, conduct extensive relations with North and South America, India, China, Japan, &c, and for some years the Elephant braud has taken n prominent position for purity and excellence throughout Australia and New Zealand. . The Bhow case, which was exhibited at BdlnJjurgh, Adelaide, and Melbourne, where it obtained highest awards, is In charge of MrANDREW LEES, QaORGE STHEKT, who locally represents the firm, and who keeps large stocks of their .manufactures.
