THE SCOTTISH CARNIVAL.
The carnival at the Garrison Hall, promoted by the Dunedin Highland Rifles, was well patronised, especially by ladies, on Saturday ai'teruoou, when the principal attraction was a b.iby show. Before this event came off the usual marches and dances were gone through. There were nearly 60 entries for the show, aud, iv consequence, there fell on Dr Coughtrey, who acted as judge, much hard work iv seeing that all the striplings were properly weighed—a task which occupied his time for fully two hours. All the youtigsters bshaved admirably, there being very little nf the "squalling" which is generally incidental to a show of this kiud, and the chubby faces and plump arms of the young cherubs were therefore seen to advantage, and were, one aud all, greatly admired by the members of the fair sex, who fondly viewed them. After all the necessary weighing had been got through Dr Coughlrey stepped on the stage, aud aunounced the result as follows:—
Best baby between 12 and 15 mouths of ago (prize, rug and cosey): Annie Turnbull, 14 months. Bust baby between C and 12 mouths of age (firßt prize, box of tea and one dozen photos: second, set of silver spoons; third, brooch and jiekct.l: Robert Watson, 10 months, 3UJIb, 1; Ida Stamper. 7 mouths, 'Jajlb, 2; Alice M. Fnirley.ll mouths, 2S!b, 3; Thos. Neikon, 10 months, 27£lb, special prize. Best baby under 6 months of age (first prize, bracelet; second a suit of clothes and doll; third, doll): Archibald Graham, 1; Maggie Campbell, 2 ; Thomas Ireland, 3. Twins (prize, hindsome spring mattress): Mrs Williams' boys, aged 3 years, 1; Mrs Peter Clark's bay and girl, 18 months, special prize.
The hall was crowded to overflowing on Saturday night. The children, conducted by the Messrs Stuart, went through the march and the accompanying dance iv capital style. Messrs Muuro, Gillies, aud the Stuart brothers danced the Highland R^el and the Heel o'Tullocb, throwing plenty life into their performance, aud received a well-merited encore for the latter. The other items on the programme were a Highland fling by the brothers M'Kechnie, a sword dauca by Master Smith, and a cutlass exerci.io by a squad of the Navals, under Petty-officer Price. During tha eveniug the Kaikorai Baud played a number of selections on the stage, aud it is almost needless to say that their efforts were appreciated. The programme altogether was a most acceptable and enjoyable one, and it is not surprising to learn that the suggestion was made mauy times on Saturday night to the Highlanders that they fhould repeat it. The sales which followed were very brijk, and by the close ol the bazaar a goud round sum of tn< ney had changed hands. It is said that £500 has been reali:fid during the four nights on which the curuival has been open. Mr J. L Gillie?, jun., secretary, deserves a word of praise for the energetic manner in which hi! has worked for the EiicuPbs of the whole affair, and a similar compliment should be paid fllr Suttou for the tasteful way in which he decorated the hall.
