THE EXHIBITION REGATTA. Mr A. D. Sligo (hon, sec. Exhibition Regatta Committee) ha3 forwarded us the following correspondence which ha^ taken place between the Wellington R.C.and the Regatta Committee (through the Exhibition Commissioners in Wellington and Duuedin) with reference to the rowing events to be competed for at the Exhibition Regatta in February:—

I Wellington, 30th Septemler 1889. T.K. MacJonald, Ksq., Commissioner to the N.Z. and S.S. Exhibition. Desr Sir, lam directed by my committee to draw your attention to a few facts connected with the rowing clubs of the colony with a view to the alteration of the conditions of the Exhibition Kegatta to be held in Dunedin. Ab it now stands, insteid of being a colonial regatta it will be a purely local one, none of the clubs north of Duneiliu being eligible to compete witnout losing tholr amateur status, as the Duncdln olubsare not affiliated to the N.Z. Amateur Bowing Assoolatlon.'and the regatta is consequently not held under its auspices. I might, however, point out that the Eegatta Committee have taken the rules of the N.2.A.R.A. as those under which the eventß will be contested. .... My committee beg to offer two suggestions to the committee who are managing the regatta, either of which they feil sure will meet with a favourable reception by the various rowing club3 In the colony. The fjrßt is that tho Dunedlh clubs be asked to join the N.Z.A.U.a.., and hold the regatta under that body's direction. By doing this, and leaving the prihcip.il r«ce as it now stands, for batswings, the following clubs, possessing that class of boat, would be able to compete:—Wellington and Star Clubs (Wellington), Nelson and Wakatu Clubs (Nelson), Wangauui and Union Clubs (Wanganui), Auckland and St. George's Bay Clubs (Auckland), Picton, Blenheim, Kopier, and Gisborne Clubs. The alternative proposal is that the committee place on the programme a race for outriggers (best aud best boats), under the rules of the N.Z.A.R.A., for a priae of, say, £60 or £60. All the clubs above named wou d be able to enter for this, as would tho Canterbury, Uuion, and AvOn Clubs (Christchureh), Cure Club (Kaiapoi), Akoroa, and Lyttelton Clubs, as they possess outrigged, but not inrigged boats. Whatever steps are taken would need to te taken at once, as the a'ssociatlon meet in Wellington some time in October. The secretary would no doubt be pleased to give all information. We should be glad to learn that something is being done in one of the directions proposed, as' an impression is gaining ground that the Dunedin clubs are afraid to meet the Northern men, and, therefore are trying to debar them from competing. The Regatta Committee replied through the secretary of the exhibition as follows :—

lours of the 9th inst., with enclosures, to hand. Mr Hyama does not state the case fairly. To meet them we adopted their rules, and asked them to waive for the occasion the rule that only affiliated clubs to their association could compete for raees rowed under their auspices. They wished to forceall competing clubs to join their association, and individual crewe not club crews would have beenexcluded. The reply of the Regatta Committee was: "We want to make this an open regatta to the world, and that can only be done by abolishing any rule that tends to exclusiveness. The association has the remedy io their own bauds of what they complain of—viz., suspend their rule of exclusivencsa for this special occasion, for which I believe thtre is a precedent in the annals of their archives. The matter was anxiously discussed, and no other way could be seen out of the difficulty.—Xours, A. D. Sligo.

VISIT OF AUSTRALIAN J3OWLER3. Mr M. Hendershausen has received intimation that the United Australian team of bowlers will leave Melbourne about the 17th of December on their tour of New Zealand. The following is the programme for the trip, aud the intention of the promoters is to carry it out as arranged, allowing of courso for accidents and other unforeseen circumstances that may crop up:—Starting on or about December 17 from Melbourne, play their first match at Duncdin against the Dunedin Club—will play Invercargill and Oamaru if time permits. Leave Dunedin by rail about December 29 for Christchurch, Btoppiug there a few days. Arrive in Wellington on January 5, 1890, stay three days, and, if convenient, go on to Napier; from thence to Auckland—three days at Auckland— and then leave for Sydney, playing at Sydney according to matches arranged. The team will be accompanied by the following gentlemen :— Mr R. K. Montgomerie, arranging amusements ; Mr J. Jenvey, musician and reporter) Mr C. Nettleton, hon. secretary and photographer,.

An Auckland telegram states_ that the committee of the Auckland Racing Club met yesterday, when a letter was received from the Duncdin Jockey Club respecting the appointment of a delegate to attend a meeting which it is proposed should be held iu Dunedjn to further discuss the new rules of racing. A decision in the matter was postponed, but it is considered probable that the Hon. B. Mitchelson will be nsked to represent Auckland. The position of starter to the Auckland Racing Club has been resigned by Mr J. T. Buckland, who is about to leave for Australia. The Tapanui Courier is informed that a wellknown sporting man intends to test the legality of the metropolitan raciug clubs' action in interfering with the up-country clubs. A nomination has been sent of a so-called disqualified horse to the secretary of one of the metropolitan clubs, and if the animal is disqualified from getting the stakes if he wins a nice lawauit will I ensue.
