At an inquest to-day at Ngaruawahia as to the cause of death of a railway porter named •Liunett, whose body was found in the river, it transpired, as the result of post mortem examina* tion, that Linnett was dead before the body got into the water. A depression was found on the frontal bone of the skull, but decomposition was so far advanced that it could not be decided whether this had been caused by a blow. The jury returned a verdict of " Found dead." The decision of the Supreme Court, approving of the deed of composition in bankruptcy of Fraser and Sons, is to be appealed against by seven of the workmen. Mr Justice Connolly made an order to-day removing the case Patterson and another v. Humphries to the Court of Appeal, a suggestion to that effect having been received by Mr Button, defendant's counsel, from the Minister of Lauds. The sum raised in aid of the jubilee festivities already amounts to £341. Mastebton, September 20. At the District Court yesterday, before Judge Eobinson and a jury, Thomas Maxted, of Pahiatua, sued the Bank of New Zealand for £200 for dishonouring his cheque for £2 when there were funds to his credit. A verdict was recorded for plaintiff for £25, and £10 69 costs. A largely attended meeting of the public last night passed resolutions condemning the Babbit Act and its administration in the North Wairarapa district, also requesting that Government be asked to supply settlers with rabbit-proof netting at a low rate. The Government make wire netting a legal dividing fence, and contribute to the cost of erecting same between settlers' and Crown lands where they join. Wellington, September 26. The passengers by the train from Palmerston to-night report that the noise of a great explosion was heard about 6 o'clock. People were inquiring about it at the various stations passed from Shannon to Paikakariki, but none could give any explanation. The police here know nothing about it beyond the fact that some sort of explosion was heard. A project is on foot to amalgamate the Wellington Meat Export Company and the Wellington Refrigerating Company. A meeting is to be held next week to arrange details. Nelsoh, September 28. His Excellency Lord Onslow to-day visited St. Mary's Girls' Orphanage, accompanied by Lady Onslow. They were recipients of an address, and having inspected the whole establishment were well plesiecil. The party then drove to the Boys' Catholic Orphanage, at Stoke, which contains 167 inmates, where an address was presented, and speeches delivered by Father Mahoney, Judge Broad, and the mayor. His Excellency expressed his gratification at all they had seen, and noticed the good appearance of the children. Christchumh, September 26. At tho annual meeting of the Anglers' Society it was decided to hold another competition on December 16 on similar lines to last year. Entries for Saturday's entire horse parade are more numerous than on any previous occasion. Two further charges of forgery against Charles Hillary Parker were heard to-day. Accused was committed for trial on each. He will stand his trial on five charges in all.
