THE TARIFF.
The following oircular has been issued by Mr HS. M'Kellar, seoretary and inspector of the Departmont of Trade and Customs, dated 3rd September:— •• As the intention o( ciroular 526 has not been rightly understood by those who have not had the opportunity of reading it in oonnectlon wilh ciroular 518, general order 98, and Bectlou 64, whence, aB you know, the words ' apparently accidental omission, &o.,'are quoted. The commissioner has instructed me to say that It was to meet the case of so-called • mistakes' that are really, although possibly, unintentionally offences against the law by which the Importers would beneiit la undiscovered to the prejudice of the revenue Bud other importers. Post entries may be accepted as usual in all cases of merely clerical errors or obvious mistakes discoverable on the face of an entry. " You will be so good as to explain this to importers and agentß, and point out to them that all depends upon themselves, and that they have nothing to fear so long as ordinary care Ib taken In correctly making out entries, also that whenever in doubt about any article the marking of the wordß ' for examination • againstit on the entry will be sufficient protection."
