EARLY CLOSING.
TO THE EDITOE. Sir —I regret that four persons—Messrs Pauli.'Duvey, Cotterill, and Sscott—reopened last night. Indeed, the last gentleman has deliberately broken the agreement since the first night, though he was the first to sign it, and I believe Messrs Lo Keong and Ma Hoon have been unfaithful. I- am afraid this will upset the whole thing. It seems the public want educating on this subject. The above gentlemen say they have lost by closing early. If so, it shows the public do not practically support the scheme or they would make their purchases during the day. Anyhow, the matter has not had a fair trial. Whatever others may do, I shall close for one month. If, at the end of that time, I sustain a loss, I shall open again. I almost despair of ever seeing the thing properly fixed till Parliament passes the Shop Hours Bill. A public meeting, however, should at once be held to form a strong early closing association, and the Tailoresses' Union might help; its secretary might call the meeting and obtain speakers, &c. It is said that working men particularly buy at night. Strange that those who enjoy the shortest hours should be the most culpable.— I am, &c, Joseph Braithwaite. j Dunedin, September 11. '
