DREDGING THE POMAHAKA.
Our Tapanui correspondent writes: — " The popular impression here is that there is a lnrne amount of gold in the Pomahaka, and from time to time various attempts have been made to win it from the river. Cradling 071 the bars appear to have been the most successful, and iib much as JEladay has been made when the river was very low, with cradle and shovel. Dredging has also been tried, but each attempt has resulted in failure. The dredges used were spoon dredges, and the appliances crude and old fashioned. Although the operators were sure gold was there, their complaint was that they could not put through encugh of the stuff to make it pay. All this is to be changed. lam informed that an attempt is to be made to form a syndicate of gentlemen outside the district who have had plenty of experience, and after they have taken up a long stretch of the river, they will spend £3000 on I dredge with all the latest appliances, and capable of pul ting through a large quautity of stuff per day. I believe that application will bo made for the land at once, and operations commence immediately. It !b Ui be hoped that the venture will be a success, for it will benefit the district, at large, as the dredge wh.eu in work will employ neurly 20 ineu." The Lake Wnkatip Mail says:—Local residents, ami especially those who know something of the value and character of the Ijig Bunch and adjoining
