UNIVERSITY COUNCIL.

A special meeting of the University Council, held yesterday, was attended by Dr Stuart (chancellor), Messrs J, Roberts, K. L, Stanford, B. B. Cargill, G. G. Russell, Dr Hocken, Dr Burns, and Mr Justice Williams.

The Chancellor Baid: I suppose the chief business is just to consider about this goldfield of ours on the Barewood run and the museum reserve, and try to find out what should be done, From the advice we had at the last meeting we agreed to issue, under certain regulations, prospecting licenses, and no less than 30 licenses have been issued. I was getting alarmed at the ir.iuibcr applying, especially when I understood that tho runholders could como upon us for compensation. I, therefore, thought it was extremely desirable that we should know whether we could give leases by and bye. Mr Roberts consulted with me, and wo agreed to have this meeting and get our solicitor to advise us.

The council then went into committee to consider the matter, and after consultation with Mr F. R. Chapman, they decided to issue no more prospecting licenses; also to communicate with Mr Pogson to attend a meeting of the council next Thursday for further consideration of the matter.
