Auckland, August 30.

D. B. Orchard, who was arrested at Russell, was brought up at the Police" Court to-day charged with the forgery of a promissory note for £25. Tho case was' remanded till the 6th September, bail being allowed to prisoner, himsulf in £500 and two sureties in £250. He was released in thtso bonds, but was afterwards rearrested on another charge of forging a promissory note for £35. This case was also remanded, and tha application for bail was refu?ed.

It is stated other charges are pendirig against Orchard, who was a jiharebrokor doing considerable business.

Au " at home" was given by the Auckland Club at the Choral Hall in honour of Mr and Mrs J. It. Clarke, who are leaving on a visit to England. '

Elliott escaped into the street, but not before ho had received several severe scalp wounds, from which blood flowed freely. A large oton-d collected round tho shop, and the windows were broken by stones. Ultimately the police cleared the thoroughfare. The Chinamen" will be proceeded against. ■

Nelson, August 30. The City Council hare accepted tho tender for the supply of Collingwood coal for the gasworks, It is said Nelson is supplied with brighter gas than any other city in the colony, Coliingwood: coal giving a gas equal to 24 candles, as against 18 candles from Greymouth coal.

Blenheim, August 30. Hamlin, for forgery, was brought up this morniug for sentence, and admitted to probation tor 12 months. Ho had forged a bill for £35, but} had paid it. The circumstances called for merciful consideration, the prisoner having an unblemished character, aud having had' some domestic trouble. An action for slander, Horton v. Hawker, in which £1000 damages are claimed, is proceeding.

At a public meeting this evening resolutions wore passed urging the immediate construction of tho Ngakawau-ilohikinni railway line, aud to scud a deputation to Wellington, if necessary, to urge on the work.
