Government have intimated to the-pro-jectors of a Sunday newspapsr that proceedings will be instituted against them if the paper is published.
AN OUTSIDE.OPINION.
The Argus, commenting on the WardHislop correspondence, says that whether the New Zealand Government was right or wrong in its method of rebuke it was certainly right in principle.

The annual -report o£ the Benevolent Asylum discloses a shocking state oE immorality. It shows that over 700 illegitimate births arc registered annually, and that last year 44 children were abandoned.
FRANCE AND THE NEW HEBRIDES.
Replying to a question in the House -of Assembly, Sir Henry Parkes said Government 'were not in possession of any information respecting French action in the New Hebrides. Government must decline to make any representation to the Imperial Government, on the matter unless they received substantial evidence as to what was taking place. ' ' ■ ■:

Government have decided to establish an Agricultural department without delay.
MUTUAL LIFE ASSOCIATION.

• At the annual meeting of the Mutual.Life Association to-day the chairman announced that the expenses were rapidly being reduced, and were now only 22$ per- cent, of the income. The bonus 'distribution will take place at Christmas, and t anbther two years hence.

Mr Taylor, a leading accountant in the city, has .been arrested at"Colombo ori a, charge of absconding with intent to "defraud his creditors.:- His liabilities amount1 to half a million. Several banks have been swindled to the extent altogether of £200,000. Numerous frauds have been unearthed. '

DISTURBANCES BY CHINESE.

Disturbances have arisen with the Chinese on'the south-east coast of Suthatra.'resulting in some villages being attacked and destroyed,' and a number of the inhabitants" killed.
