DANGER FROM PHOSPHORUS,
(Fbb United Press Association.) Invercadqill, July 26. A. Darling's fellmcngery at Mill road was destroyed by fire early this morning. The building w^ts insured for £140 in the New Zealand office, and its contents for £250 in the South British office. The loss is £1200 above the insurances. His fellmongery was burnt down 12 months ago, and this one had not long been rebuilt. The fire is believed to h&ve originated in a peculiar way. A farmer had brought iv several bags of tallow; as these got wet after emptying them, Darling put them near the boiler to dry. It was there that the fire was first noticed, and it has since been I ascertained that the bags had contained phosphorised oats, the inference being that sufficient of the chemical was left iv the material to set it ou fire when the moisture evaporated. A farmer states that; he has known bags impregnated with phosphorus to take fire when hung out to dry in the sun. Geuernl sympathy is felt for Mr Darling, this being the third time he has been burnt out with heavy losses.
