TAIERI COUNTY COUNCIL.
The monthly meeting of the Taieri County Connci wai held at Mosgiel yesterday; present—Mes»r» Snow (chairman), (Jrant, Graham, Pogson, Thomson, Smith, and Bunting. EfSPBCTOK'S BEPORT.
The Inspector reported that, contract 3-1-1, formation on Kisn's road, Karl Bush, was marly completed ; that contract 253, formation ou Centre road, Middlemarch, was not y«t completed; that contract 250, road formation and culvorti on the Stralh-Talerl road between Gladbrook nnd Hiddleraarch, was progressing slowly; that contract 257, erection of two
masonry and timber culverts on road Ontram to Berwick, was completed; that contract 258, road formation near Mrs Gray's, Maungatua, was not yet commenced. The formation of the track leading to Mr Collins' property, Jlouut Hyde, the road formation at Mrs Cunning's, Green Island, and the erection of cutverts on the Gladfield road were completed.
The following works were also completed.—The footbridge across the Deepstreara at Walsh's; the Eiveraioe road, near M'Klrklandi; the planking of Hie Henley brldgeand the protection fence at Otaklm, The road betvnen Mr Cameron's and the Halfway Bush road, 65 ahains In length, had been examined. Three cuttings were neceasary, alsu 30ujds of metnl. Cardigan street, Arden, had alto been examined,and it was found that it was liable to bo damaged by the overflowing of March creek. The road leading to the Kasfc Taieri church and school wna badly in need of repair, and 150 yds of gravel would bo |required for it.—lt w*» resolved to cancsl contract 258, tho work to be carried out by the surfacemen, and that tenders be called for the work on the road from Mr Cameron's to the Halfway Bush road. engineer's kepobt, Mr B. Hay, county engineer, reported that the new culverts on the road Outram to Berwick would be fiulshed before the monthly meeting, and repairs effected to the culvert near Woodside. Tho road at Strath-Taieri under contract to Davis and Cuttle was progressing slowly, the frost having delayed the work. L. Junge had been naked to complete his contract at once, and failing his compliance therewith it should be completed at his risk. The new clay road at Brighton was completed, and would require attention lor some time, Henley drainage: The outlet box at the B drain required renewal, and should be attended to at once.—lt was resolved that the engineer's recoraraeudntion re Junge'i contract bn approved, and that A. Graham ba authorised to obtain the signatures to tho deed conveying tho laud for road from Xourlg's teotions, Brighton. COKOESPOSDKSCK. A petition was received from SO residents in the East Taieri, Hiccarton, and Saddle lIIU districts calling attention to the state of the road leading from the Main road to the Taieri School, the cemetery, &o.—The matter was ordered to stand over. Mt John Allan, Taurima, wrote complaining that he was paying rates on 600 acreß for the drainage ef 200. lie requested the council 1 o take this matter
luto consideration, with a view to exercising their powers to classify the land so that th« rates might bo more equitably levied than they are at present,— The matter wa3 referred to the chairman for consideration.
Messrn Stewart ana Holme 3 (instructed by Mr Joseph Hughes, of Outram) claimed from the council the sum of £30, being value of a horse lost by Mr Hughe3 in consequence of the gates on the Deep Stream bridge not haying been kept up. Unless tfie iimount was at once paid it would be Bued for.—The Council disclaimed any liability in the matter. Mr James Lillieo, Konlyn, wrote that a pstltion had been forwarded to the Governor praying that the boundaries of the borough of Koslyn should be to altered and extended as to embrace an area at present forming part of the Taieri County—viz., sections 8 to 15, Lower Kaikorai survey district; sections 133 to 129, Wakari survey distriot j sections 105 to 103, townihlp of JHolyrood ; applioatlon numbar 1177 and sections H7 to 75, sub-division Bush reserre, block VI, Dunedin and Bast Tnieri survey district. It was resolved—" That this council object to nay extension of the borough boundaries unless the bridge across the Kaikorai is made the boundary." Kleven ratepayers In Abbotshill asked that tho street between sections 46 and 47, Kxmouth street, should bo repaired.—Keferred to Or Thomson and the inspector with power to act. Two petitions, one signed by 4,6 ratepayers, and another by 30, requested the council at as early a date as possible to erect v traffic bridge over the Taieri river at Otalda. Such a bridge would be a great convenience for carrying produce, and was In fact ti necessity, and in the event of the council being unable' to grant the request they would ask them to be good enough to use their Influence with the Kallway Commissioners to have the railway bridge utilised for the purposes of ordinary dray traffic required by the petitioners.—The matter was referred to the' Hallway Commissioners, arid it was agreed to Inform them that the council were of opinion that something should be done in the way of making the bridge passable. Mr John Milne wrote that the road from the Dunrobin property, at the appproach to the railway crossing at the cutting, had been rendered impamblo by the Inspector.—The council promised to attend to it. .... Mr T. M'Lay asked the coanoil to let him know if they ksd come to any decision regarding fencing tht road lino through Mr Gelibrand's property —It was resolved-" That £35 bo voted to Mr M'tay to fence tho road. Or Pogson undertaking to transfer same without further liability to the council." Afi application from Samuel Towntey for permission to take some clay from the road near Hickman's was referred to the inspector. Mr Walter Holland? drew tho counoil's attention to the disgraceful state of Gray street, leading from the main road to the railway station.—Keferred to the inspector. A petition, signed by nine persons, prayed for the formation of that part of the Strath-Taierl—Bald Hill road from the junction of these roads with the Moonlight road and Bald Hill.—Referred to the inspector with power to act. Seventeen ratepayers of the Henley Drainage District wrote that n grievous injury would be done them if the counoll'a 6urfaceman carried out his in-
structions to dig out and deepen what Is known as the Henwood drain at a point where it intersects Sranton creek. Mr Maurice Joel also objected to the work being cone on with.—The matter was referred to the engineer. Mr Wni. Thompson wroto that at a meeting held at hlB house on July 3 it was agreed th»t the road lino between sections 2 of 46 and 45 and through section 1 of 48, 49, and SO. block VII, Dunedin and East Taieri districts, should be stopped.—lt was resolved that the decision of the Otakia ratepayers should be confirmed. Mr G. W. Pogson wrote that at a public meeting held at Mlddlemarch on July 3 it was agreed that the road line through section 18. blook VI, Mount Hyde, should bo closed, and that another road through the same section should bo opened. - It was resolved to confirm the decision. . Mr Poison also wrote that nt a meeting held at Middlemareh on July 3 it was agreed to close tho road Hue through sections 63 and part of 61 and between sections 69 and CO, 00 and 81, and 64 and 65, block IX, Strath-Taleri.-The decision was confirmed. A deputation, consisting of Meairs M'Qnilkan, Lelihman, and M'Kenzle, waited on the council asking that the deviations on the road down Sliverstream he secured.—lfr was agreed to refer the matter to the Inspector to ascertain the cost of securing the deviation. THE SMALL EISD NUISANCE, Cr Graiiajj moved—" Thnt the club be Instructed to procuro and koep in stock a quantity of poisoned grain, to be «upplied at half cO6t to anjone approved of by the council." KOTICE OF MOTION. Cr GmjtT gave notice of the following motion for next meeting:—" That a separate rate bo levied on all those ridings whose account is overdrawn to the estent of more than ono year's rates."
