Auckland, May 16. A petition has been promoted at Tauranga asking that the Land Act maybe amended so that any intending settler may be able at any time to select Crown lands without any notification being necessary of such land being open for selection. The Waipa County Council have declined to support this petition. A preliminary inquiry into the Rangitoto Channel collision has been held before Mr Hill, collector of customs; and the evidence will be sent to Wellington. The official inquiry is to take place before the E.M., Dr Giles, when the Australia returns to port.
Gisbobne, May 16. A young man named Henry Cannon, while attempting to ford a flooded creek at Waipiri, was drowned.
Wellington, May 16. • A man named William Media, admitted to the hospital suffering from a dose of poison taken by mistake at Otaki, died to-day. At a meeting of the recently established Agricultural and Pastoral Association the Governor was elected patron, and W. H. Levin president. The first show will be held on the Hutt racecourse in November.
The Ministers' Association are making efforts here to raise funds in aid of those suffering from famine in China.
A threshing machine at Featherstone, belonging to Thomas George Bean, was destroyed by fire this morning. It was insured for £200 in the New Zealand office. Incendiarism is suspected.
- • Chktstchubch, May 16. The Very Rev. Dean Jacobs has resigned the archdeaconship of Christchurch. The bishop has promoted Rev. Croasdaile Bowen to the dignity.
A man named Patrick Dunn, alias Morgan, and Kate Harvey, an ex-barmaid, were committed for trial to-day on a charge of robbing Neil Leitch of £9 in the Palace Hotel on Tuesday. Bail was allowed the female, but denied to Dunn.
Mr F. Jones, M.H.E. for Heathcote, received a vote of confidence at Ferry road to-night. He declared himself opposed to altering the present educational system and to centralism.
There was an interesting gathering at Lyttelton to-night, when a number of the passengers of the lonic met at the Mitre Hotel and presented the chief engineer (Mr Purvis) with a handsome gold watch and address in appreciation of his services in connection with the breakdown of the machinery.
Timaru, May 16. Mr Turnbull addressed his constituents tonight, and received a vote of thanks and confidence. He advocated a progressive land tax and a tax on mortgages, and said he would make charitable aid a charge on large landowners.
