THE SOLOMON ISLANDS,

News has been received from the Solomon Islands that the natives of the middle group are a-ctively preparing for another raid on the natives of fche neighbouring islands, and it is feared that much bloodshed will again result.
THE DISASTER AT SAMOA.

The information of the severe hurricane at Samoa, attended with sad loss of life and destruction of property, caused a great sensation throughout Australia. There is no sign of H.M.S. Calliope, which left Apia shortly after the storm for this port.
CARELESSNESS,
It is now believed that the jambing open of the doors in the galleries of the Bulli coal mine was due to carelessness on the part of tbe workmen, and that there was no attempt made to allow explosive gases to accumulate.
A VALUABLE DISCOVERY.

Specimens of true corundum have been found in Central Australian fields where also favourable indications have been discovered of the existence of rubies and jprobably diamonds.
