TROTTING RACES.

Sik,—ln reading your report of Monday's racing at the Forbury, you take notice of the splendid way in which Random cut down his field iv the Three-mile Trot, and thatthere was some talk of a protest for his not running in his beat form on Saturday. I wonder if there was any person on the course on Saturday that believed he trotted in anything like his best form. You also remark that nothing more than this was heard.of it, the matter not coming before the club in any way.

Now, Sir, I would ask why the officials of the club did not take cognisance of the matter ? Why do the stewards of the Metropolitan Club of Otago throw the onus of complaining on the shoulders of owners and riders ? Is it not a fact that such things as stiff running, &c. happen under their very noses, and yet it is winked at ? It is also a fact that at least one horse was put out of its chance of winning in the Three-mile Trot on Saturday by what must be termed the illegal practices of another rider. And again it is true that another horse was put completely out of the Two-mile Trot on that day by the same party, and the stewards saw it right enough, but took no notice of it. Now, Sir. what I want to know is why such things are. Are the stewards of the Dunedin Jockey Club afraid, or is there some of them so much interested in these trots that they dare not do their duty as stewards; which is it?—l am, &c, March 30. Disgusted.

[It is possible that the owner of Random may have a complete answer to the accusation; but there is no doubt there is a lot of crooked running in the trotting races, and the D.J.C. ought to exercise more complete supervision over them.—Ed. O. D. TJ
