MR ADAMS' HINTS.
TO THE EDITOR. Sin,—l read with pleasure the note submitted for the guidance of tourists by our worthy exploring chief with considerable interest. Many very valuable suggestions are given, and it was only reasonable to conclude the usual percentage of error would appear where so many subjects and contingencies were treated. I will not question too closely the table of elevations given in connection with the Clinton Valley route, but will point out something more noteworthy. Mr Adams locates a lake, Eleanor, 11 miles above boat landing up tbo Clinton Valley, and 1994 ft above sea level. This is strange, because there is no lake of that name in the whole route There is, however, a very beautiful lake, named by Mr to'Kinnon (the original explorer of this grand valley) the Mintano lake, and it is situated about 13 miles above Lake Te Anau, but certainly not 1994 ft above sea level. Doubtless this is the lake referred to by Mr Adams. Possibly he was thinking of some fair lady relative ■ who bore that name, and in a fit of reverie [ wrote Eleanor, and hence the error. My object in penning these few lines is to save confusion, and not to reflect upon Mr Adams' information regarding the route, which was really remarkable, coming as it does from a gentleman who had not travelled overland to the Sutherland Falls.
The advice given about sowing and planting was worthy a more hospitable region. Tourists might as well plant split peas, haricot beans, and camphor, and expect them to germinate. But m this life everything must bo taken with the orthodox "grain of salt." By the way, Mr Adams does not include salt in his list o£ essentials.—l am, &c, January 16. a Billy Each.
