Auckland, January 18. Mr D. Hem, inspector of the National Bank, left for London to-day.

A cottage owned ami occupied by Mr K. Ellis in Wellington street was burned to-day, and three shops belonging to Mr H. M'Kay, and occupied respectively by Messrs F. Caiu, T. Lingham, and J. Home, were gutted. The insurances were : Ellis, cottage £150 and furniture £100 in the Liverpool, London, and Globe ofliee; M'Kay, throe shops, £-100 in the Royal ; Home's stock, £200 in the Colouial.

Nkw Plymouth, January IS. The last of the alleged perjury cases was concluded this morning, when Albert Edward Newsome, charged with having given perjured evidence in the case M'Louchlin v. Petrie, was committed for trial.

Wanoakui, January IS. Two Maoris, Epanga and Kurata Whiti, were brought up on remand at the Police Court to-day charged with having caused the death of William Kells, at Waitotara, on January 7. After hearing evidence Kurata Whiti was discharged, there not being a prima facie case made out. Epanga was committed for trial at the Supreme Court on April 24. Bail was allowed, himself in £200 and two sureties in £100 each.

Wellington, January 18. It is understood that the Cabinet have decided upon the question of the vacancy on the Supremo Court bench, but the name of the gentleman selected has not been made known, as negotiations between him and the Premier are still being carried on.

Captain Fairchild will pilot the flagship Orlando during her visit to the Sounds. The Calliope leaves for Samoa on Monday, and the remainder of the squadron will move seaward about the 24th.

OinusTcnußcn, January 18. At the Little River Magistrate's Court lately a Maori girl named Mary Walker, aged 13, was brought before Mr Whitefoord, R.M., a day or

two previously. She visited a relative in a distant part of the settlement, and startled him by informing him that her father was dead. She asked if she might gather flowers to decorate the coffin and strew upon the grave. Her relative gave permission. Having got flowers, she took them to the hotel and sold them for Is. She then called on the storekeeper and said she had sold some potatoes to Mrs Reynolds, the statioumaster's wife, who, having "no change, had sent her to the storekeeper, who would much oblige her if he would pay the girl on her account 3s. The storekeeper thought this rather strange, and wrote a note asking Mrs Reynolds if the girl's story was correct. This he told the girl to deliver and bring back an answer. The girl took it away and shortly afterwards returned bringing back the same paper endorsed in very good handwriting, apparently by Mrs Reynolds, to the effect that she had sent Mary and the message was what she had intended to bo conveyed. On this he handed the money over and thought no more about till he met the lady when he found she knew nothing about it.

two swindles for the gratification of her love of finery, on which she spent the proceeds. Mr Whitefoord convicted and liberated her on probation for six months.

iNVEECAnoiLi, January 18. An oyster and fishing company, with a capital of £25,000, has been formed. It begins operations on the Ist pros. The company have already purchased 10 vessels, aud arosecuring a steamer. Mr J. G. Ward, M.H.R., is the managing director.
