The Bteamer Beautiful Star, with cargo »nd pissengers from Oamaru, arrived at tke Dunedln wharf at 10.05 p.m. on Wednesday, having left that port at 3.20 p.m. of that day; had N.W. wiuds until breasting Shag Point, thence light southerly winds and fine weather to arrival. We thank Mr Brewer, chief officer, for report. The steamer Manapourl steamed down from Dunedln early yesterday morning and berthed at the Bowon pier. After totting in cargo she embarked her passengerß and sailed in theaf ternoon for Melbourne, via the Bluff and Hobart.

Fifeshire is expected to pass Otago Heads en route for Oamaru and Tiraaru on Tuesday next. ■ Abstract! have been Issued to Parliament of the returns made to the Board of Trade of shipping casualties which occurred on or near the coasts or in rivers and harbours of the United Kingdom from July 1. 1885, to June 30, 1886; also of the returns made to the Board of Trada during the year 1886-8 of shipping casualties which occurred to British vessels elsewhere, and to foreign vessels on or near the coasts or in the rivers aud harbours of British possessions abroad, with particulars of lives lost, So. The abstracts differ from those of former years in that they are more comprehensive, and more attention Is given to details. The total number of casualtiei.sorioußandotherwisu, to vessels belonging . to the United Kingdom was, we learn from ttuse returns, 5851, while the number of total losses wa» 853 (tonnage, 312,315), against 661 (tonnage 212.148) ** In the previous year. The number of eorious casualties was 1340, and of these 697 occurred to steamships. The loss of life in vesiels belonging to the United Kingdom was 1868, or a decrease of 425, aud 1073 less than the avirage for the 10 years preceding. Of theßO 1068 lives, 553 wore loit in missing vessels. The total number of casualties to vessels belonging to British possessions abroad was 1058, and the total lost was 411, tlili being higher than for several years previously. The loss of life was 818, and these figures show an increase of 297 above the average for the nine prevloui yean. The general details of the returns are most voluminous, and authenticated wreck charts are also given. A recent cablegram stated that the Undaunted and the Iris were to be commissioned for the Australian station. The following information regarding those vessels Is from Lord llrotsey'n "Naval Annual":— H.M.3. Undannted Is a «ister ship to the Orlando. She ia of 5000 tons displacement, and ef 8500 h.p.; beam, 56ft j length, 300 ft; draught of water, 2iltt 81n; total cost, £256,055. Sbe carries two 9-in 32-ton b.l.r. guns, 10 6-in do, 14 q.f. guns, four maohine guns; with a Bpeed of 18 knots. Her coal supply will enable her to steam 8000 knots at a speed of 10 knots. Her armour is of the following thickness:—On the side armourbblt, lOin; on the trans' verse bulkheads, 16in; aud 12In on the conning tower, all compound armour. The Irie Is nothing bnt a despatch veieel, unarmoured, of the same •peed. She carries tv<o 64-pounders, muzzle-loaders ; fonr 6-ta breech-loaders, four 5-in do. Like all vessels nowadays, she is fitted for discharging torpedoes, but I do not see that she would be of much service as a fighting ship.
