Mr R. J. O'Sullivan, senior inspector of schools, Auckland provincial distriot, forwarded a letter to the Board of Education to-day intimating that on July 31 next he would resign that position. Mr O'Sullivan has been connected with educational matters iv this district since 1569, aud ia esteemed a high educational authority. The City Couucil has referred the electrio lighting of the city to a committee, along with a lotter of Mr J. C. Firth relative to the conclvision of his lightiug experiments. The property valuation for the suburban boroughs is as follows:—Newmarket, £12,177, being a decrease of £1842; Parnell, £28,860, beiug a decrease of £16-10; Newton, £20,035, an increase of £002. Wkllinoton, January 20. Somo excitement was caused iv town this evening by an outbreak of fire in a restauraut kept by a" Chinamau which adjoined the Bank of New Zealand. At one timo it appeared as if the tiro had a linn hold, but the brigade with a strong pressure of water soon beat it out. The Government havo cancelled the regulation prohibiting the public from admittance to Government Buildings before 2 iv tho afternoon. The Native Miuister will shortly leave for the North in order to bo present at a meetiug of Waikato Natives. The Hon. Mr Mitchelson has promised the representative of Messrs Cook aud Sons, the English tourist agents, that the same concessions will be made to the firm upon railway coupons as are extended by the Australian colonies. After the annual inspection of the forces, Major-general Whitmore will resign his position as commander of the New Zealand forces. Sir George Whitmoro some time ago offered to perform the duties without salary, but the Government thought there were serious objections to this course. It is understood that Major Boddam, of tho Permanent Militia, has resigned his position. It is stated that oue of tho forts at Halswell will be dismantled and rebuilt. The results of the examinations conducted under the direction of the Pharmacy Board of New Zealand have been mado public. The following have passed in all subjects : —P. A. Garratt, Wellington ;W. Baxter, Christchurch; E. Treegaskis, Auckland; aud Charles Robinson, Auckland. The following passed iv pharmacy ouly:—Kitchen, Wanganui; Staples, Wellington ; Kenderdiue, Auckland; A. S. Maxwe !, Auckland; and R. J. Roberts, Auckland. Maxwell (Auckland) aud Miss L. Hentli (Wellington Hospital) bave pss*ed in botany. Baxter obtained au average ot 87 marks out of 100.
