The election of a member of the Assembly for Williamstown vice Mr A. T. Clark, resigned, took place yesterday, and resulted in the return of Mr James Mirams. THE CESSION OF RAIATEA. The Premier, replying to a communication from Major Atkinson respecting the reported proposed cession of the island of Raiatea to France, states that the Victorian Government have no information of such a proposal. THE COLLISION AT WILLIAMSTOWN. (Received November 3, at 10.25 p.m.] The occupant of the steam launch injured yesterday in the collision off WilliamstowH has succumbed to the injuries received. • PROTECTION TO FARMERS. (Received November 4, at 1.20 a m.) A deputation from the Farmers' Conference waited upon the Premier (Mr Gillies) to-day relative to protecting the agricultural stockraising interests of Victoria. Mr Gillies informed the deputation that he would lay the matter before his colleagues, but feared some of the proposals could not be entertained. NEW SOUTH WALES CENTENARY. Sydney, November 3. (Received November 3, at 1.35 p.m.) Sir H. Parkes' proposals for centennial celebrations, which include amongst other events the holding of a regatta at which a challenge cup valued at £500 is to be competed for, has been agreed to by the Assembly. SALE OF PROPERTY AT SYDNEY. The GoTernmont have completed the purchase of the Australasian Steam Navigation Company's propsrty for £270,000. THE MELBOURNE EXHIBITION. Hobart, November 3, (Hecelved November 3, at 1.35 p.m.) In the Assembly last night, a motion proposing to grant £3000 for the representation of Tasmania at the Melbourne Exhibition was withdrawn, on the ground that the people of Tasmania are not desirous of participating thereat. THE SMALLPOX OUTBREAK. fßecoived November 4, at 1.20 a.m.) One fresh cash of smallpox is reported; otherwise the epidemic is unchanged.
It has been ascertained that a fresh case of smallpox has occurred near Launceston. No new cases are reported in this neighbour-
hood.
