COMMERCIAL,
Daily limes Office, Saturday evening,
The amount of customs revenue received fco-day on goods cleared for consumption was £600 5s 9d.
The customs revenue for the past week on goods cleared for consumption amounted to J53886 3s. The beer duty amounted to £179.
In business circles the past week has been a quiet one, and operations have been on a limited scale. Values of goods, however, are maintained, and the tone of the market generally is healthy and strong. The arrival of the Hampshire from Calcutta, on the New Zealand coast has led to increased sales of woolpacks, and she will reach thi3 port with a large portion of her cargo disposed of. It is almost an accepted fact that the supply of packs bound for this market will not bo sufficient for requirements, and holders are consequently not eager to quit their stocks in view of a probable improvemeutin values. Rscest sales have boen made of parcels at 3s per pack, while smaller lots hava been placed at up to 3s 3d per pack. Dried fruils continue to command good attention, and prices are firmly •maintained. Business is passing in currants at s|d per lb, and in suit anas at 6jd per lb. There is inquiry, too, for fish, notably for American salinou, which has advanced in price of late until now 9s to 9s 3d per dozen is paid for leading brands. As the brewing season approaches, there ia an improved demand being felt for hops, and Nelson's are commanding a fair sale at rates ruled a good deal by the sample. In metals | there is no change to report. Fencing wire continues to meet with fair inquiry. Kerosene is in good demand, and as recent shipments to Australia have lightened spot stocks very considerably, supplies on hand are not heavy, aufl values have hardened. High-test oils secure Is 3d to Is 4d per gallon in bond. Ordinarytest oils are scarce, and find buyers up to Is per gallon, in bond. Patna rice has rapidly advanced with Bmall supplies to draw from, and holdors ask £24 per ton, duty paid. Sugar moves off for requirements, but values have iv no way altered from our last quotations. Buyers of teas have been holding off for the arrival of tho Whampoa with the second direct shipment ■for this market, and we look for an increased trade in this import as soon as her shipment is available. Millers' lines have ruled [during tho week as follow:—Flour, £10 to £10 10s per ton ; oatmeal, £8 10s per ton; psarl barley, £18 per ton • pollard, £4 per ton; chaff, £2 5s to £2 15s per ton ; bran, £3 per ton. *•■— SHARE MARKET.
