This was carried, every porson in the place holding up his hand in favour of the motion. Mr ]?. M. Byrne, speaking at a meeting of Mr J. Brown's supporters at Lawrence on Friday night, gave expression to views which show that a candidate who secures works and the expenditure of money in his district is not always appreciated. Mr Byrne said they might have got sludge channels and subsidiesjfor Lawrence, but Lawrence was not the electorate of Tuapeka, anil even if it were, Tuapeka was not New Zealand. And let them remember that for these miserable drains and sludge channels they had p.,:d a hi-h price—that for at least 20 years they bad been slavishly selling their votes for these bribe* ; that in (loins- ihis they were enco.urai;ing the growth, of ;C<i= ~: o m!iM system df politics; th:iL what injuru'l New Zealand :is a whose would Min-ly react on them; and tbiit they were credited with being the most venial ami corrupt constituency in the colony.
