The following TESTIMONIALS in favour of Mr J. M'Do.vaxd's CEMENT have |been handed to us for publication:— October 20,1886. To Mr James M'Donald. Testß of the samples of Otago cement submitted to me for experiment gave an average tensile breaking strain of 10701b on 2_ square Inches 14 days after mixing. Briquettas were gauged with fresh water, allowed to set 24 hours, and immersed In salt water for six days ; the rcmainiug seven days they were exposed to the air. F. W. Marchant, A.M. Imifc. C.E., Resident Engineer Timaru Harbour Board. Public Works Depart ment, Englneer-In-Chief's Office, Wellington, November 12,1888. James M'Donald, Esq., Lime Merchant, &c, Dunedin. With reference to the particulars of the tests of your hydraulic limes and cements sent you on the ith ult., the four samples of cement marked A, B, C, and D last received are all hydraulic cement, setting rapidly under water without blowing or showing any other defects. With the exception of two of the D quality, all the seven days' tests for strength come over the Government specification for colonial cement, and the average of the B sample lis considerably above the strength we specify for English cement. I have no doubt you are now on the way to produce a cement (equal all round to the Imported ar-' tide. All that ia wanted is uniformity of quality. W. N. Blair. [Note. —The samples submitted to Mr Blair were four different compositions for the purpose of testing, and we are now manufacturing from the particular composition which gave the best results.— J. MD.] Dunedin, April 28,1887. To J. M'Donald, Esq., Cement Manufacturer. Sir,—Having been present at the trials of your cement at the stores iv Vogel street a short timesince, I was induced to give instructions for ltto be used at the new buildings now in course of erection for the Daily Times and Witness Company, Dowling and Macandrew streets. . 1 have now much pleasure in reporting that it has given me entire satisfaction, and I shall have no hesitation in recommending it to any person requiring cement. I .consider It to be as good as any cement 1 have used during a period of 25 years In ' Dunedin. So long as you make an article of the quality now being supplied to my present work I shall use no other, feeling it a duty to support the colonial-made cement when the quality is equal to and the price no more than the imported article.—l am, &c, Hy. P. Hardy. Architect. Dunedin, May 2,1887. This ts to certify that I have examined Mr M'Donald's Portland Cement, manufactured- ln ; Dunedin, both as to samples submitted and as to i the process of manufacture, and have to report as foi- ' lows: - , 1. Varioussamplesduringthelast six months have 1 been submitttd to me aud I have had them J thoroughly tested for the following purposes :—For "I the use of construction as mortar, for compounding s plaster, and for mixing in with concrete; and I have always found this Cement for these purposes quite equal to the best that I have known imported. 2. I went over the factory where the Cement is made, and found that the various raw materials' used were of the proper sort and very carefully chosen; also, that the process used was In every way suitable to production of a first-class article in large quantities. In conclusion, I have to state that so'well satisfied ■un lof the quality of this Cement that I consider it - advisable to use it In place of the imported brands, riot only on account of its general quality, but besause it Is possible to get it fresh, and therefore in better condition for use. Frank W. Petre, Engineer and Architect, I Dunedin and Christchurch. Dunedin, 2nd May 1887. Mr James M'Donald, Cement Manufacturer, Sir,—For some time past I have been making test )f Portland Cement of various brands, and you will j be glad to hear that your Cement in every case has v stood the highest; also, that it exceeds the Govern- t ment test of 3001b to an Inch.—Yours faithfully, j Chas. D. Haix, ■_ Civil Engineer and Architect. j I Dunedin, 2nd May 1887. 1 ro Mr J. M'Donald, t Dear Sir,—l have tho pleasure to certify that I iave used the Cement manufactured by you, and the o same has given me every satisfaction ; and also that c ifc stands a very high tensil strain. —Yours truly, _' L. Boldini. d . ° Oamaru Harbour Board, ' Oamaru, 30th April 1887. c Sir,—ln reply to your telegram I have to state r that the parcel of Cement from your manufactory c ihat I tested for Mr Ussher Btood the high strain of i' 14201b before breaking, after being made and tested s in the usual way; that being an average of the r. breaking strain of nine briquets.—l am, yours d Dbediently, J Thos. Forrester, s _ ' Secretary. 8 James M'Donald, Esq., Cement Manufacturer. Z Pmjedtn. emy *
