SHOCKING CRUELTY.
A HERD OF CATTLE RUN DOWN BY A
TRAIN.

Details of the running down of a herd of cattle oia the Bluff line lasfc Thursday show that the occurrence was of a shocking character. Tlje train overtook seven head of cattle in daylight near Rockbound cutting, and ifc is said the driver did npfc slacken speed, the consequence being that the entire herd, the properly of a widow, were killed or injured, the space of 13 chains intervening between the first and last one knocked down. When the train stopped one of the animals was jambed by the legs in the cowcatcher, and it is stated that the driver hacked through the limbs with a small axe above were they were broken. The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has the matter in hand. There Ls a slight incline in the cutting, bufc trains frequently stop on it for traffic purposes. The line is not fenced for miles, although a public road runs parallel witb and close to ifc.
