MAYORAL SUPPER AT MOSGIEL.

A number of burgesses and private'frlendsmet at the invitation of the Mayor of Moegiel at a supper on Monday evening in the Qarri-on Hall, a building whioh, being adjacent to the Commercial Hotel, is very suitable for an occasion of the klud. Eightyfour gentlemen responded to the mayor's invitation, amongst whom were noticablo Lieutenant-colonel Wales, Mr A. Burt(A. and T. Burl), Mr Alexander Bain (contractor), Mr J. C. Hodges (Bank of Nnw Zealand), Messrs Charters and Gow(rei.retentirig the county council), Messrs Murdoch, Smeoton, Hardle, S. Young, and Collie. There were several other gentlemen belonging to road boards present. : 3he Chaihman proposed the toast "The Queen and Boyal Family," the National Anthem .being sung by the company; after which " Tha Onvemor aud House of Representatives" was proposed by Mr K. Charters, of Ury Park, who made an excellent croupier, -Thcjtoast havint: been duly honoured. " 'Ihe Army, Navy, aud Volunteers" was proposed by Mr J. M. Mukdoch, coupled with tie names of Lieutenants R. Smith and 6ow, Lieutenant-colonel Wales. Mr Murdoch said that although neither a militiaman, nor yet a soldier—and, now he was too old tt> be a volunteer—in his younger days he Had been belore the mast. He might say that Britain's power mainly depended upon her navy. He al uded in complimentary terms to the army aud volunt ers.lieutenant Smith, in responding for the volunteers, stated that a number in joining thought volunteering flue fun, but he could assure tbem there was no fun in preparing themselves for something different. .

Lieutenant-colonel Wales said he was sorry to see bo many strapping young lads about who were not volunteers, and thought they should buskle to harnesi'aud give the old fellows a rest. Lieutenant Gow also responded. The toast of the evening, viz.,."The Mayor of Mosgiel," was then proposed by Mr J, C. Hodge (Bank of New Zealand), In the course of his 6peech lie praised he indomitable energ displayed by the chairman. They could io l< around them, and wheree.er thoy looked they would see indications of the mayor's practical hand. Nature had ceitainly endowed them with gifts in the shape of level "roads and a plentiful 6uppy of gravel. The Mayor, In responding, said that Nature had n-1 endowed him with wordß to expr ss his eelings that evening. He had issued tho Invitation as geneialh as possible, and if he had omitttd any friends it was unintentional. "I he Taieri County Council" was proposed by Mr Gkorgb Gordon, and responded to by Crs ChabTERsandbow. Tho Chairman then proposed " The Officers of the Borough and Contractors." coupled with the names of I he borough clerk, Mr E. Findlay, and Mr Spenee, who replied "The Agricultural Interests" was proposed by Mr In.nbs, ana was responded to by Messrs Charters undGow. The other toasts were —"The Ladies," "Tha Friendly Societies," "!1 ho Press," and "Tho Hostess." -
