MINING.

WAKATIPU MINING NOTES/

(Fbom Ova Own Correspondent.) Aeeow, November 16. The heavy rain which fell on Sunday last has done much, to replenish the fast-decreasing water supply, and there is again a fair supply of the needful element in every part of this district. There is nothing startling to report from the quartz mines, most of which are in a prosperous or at least hopeful state. At Skippers some prospecting is going on in the Fiery Cross claim adjoining tho BritishAmerican (Southberg's), and a crushing will bo taken out shortly. The other newly marked out claims seem to be shepherding the Phoenix Extended. Should that claim strike it heavy no doubt there will be plenty of companies floated, and things at Skippers will become exceedingly lively. The Maori Point Company have purchased the Public Crushing Company's battery at Macetown, which is a 10-head battery, and will probably be erected on its new site and in working •rder before winter. The company have decided to drive an adit to tap their reef at a low level, giving them nearly 500 ft of backs. Mr R. Park, of Dunedin, has applied for a spfcial claim on the Shotover river, which he intends to work with one of Wellman's patent pumps and nozzle, which being a. novelty here will be watched with interest. , Macetowu, which only a few years ago was so lively a centre of business interests, is now witnessing more winding up of companies than either cakes or starting of new ventures. The Ladye Fayre and th-> Maryborough companies are winding up their affairs; and about a dozen others might do the same, for all the good they are to the place. The Premier Company is crushing away, and report says their pktes look satisfactory. The Sunrise Company are about making another start, and have already let valuable time go by without doing anything. In alluvial mining things are very quiet except at Mount Criffel, where several parties are doing exceedingly well. At Stony Creek Terrace Messrs Davis Bros, are about making a start with sluicing operations at the face, and as this undertaking has been tho heaviest of the kind in this district, if not in Otago, it will be a relief to the enterprising men who embarked in it to bo done with preliminaries. The Arrow River Tunnel Company have got all their machinery fixed and made a start with the work, everything answering well and work ing to perfection with the exception of tha valve regulating the water supply, which not not being calculated for tho immense pressure (200 ft) gave way, and will havo to be replaced by a stronger one. The Gallant Tip is crushing away, aud the stone in the mine is improving in width and quality.
