REWARDING BRAVERY.
TO THE EDITOE. Snt, —In reply to your Port Chalmers correspondent, let me say that it is a pity that he did not, before writing, communicate with Mr D. G. Stephens, for if he had he wouldhave learned that Mr Stephens has received notice that his noble efforts would, at the next annual distribution, be recognised by the Royal Humane Society of Australasia. Might I suggest that" 8.M.," if a subscriber to the society, has the, right and privilege of writing to the secretary and directors on any matter in regard to its management, and if he is not, then his fault-finding comes with a very bad grace,' The society's awards must be limited by the funds at its command, and I am aware that hitherto the support it has received at the hands of New Zealand has been very meagre, so that it ill becomes us to carp at their action.—lam,&c, . ;
John L, Gillies.
