MINING.
NOTES FROM REEFTON.
(From Our Owk Correspondent.) Reefton, August 22.
The following are the battery returns for the past week: —Welcome, 850oz amalgam; Keep-it-Dark, 3070z amalgam; Just-in-Time, 02oz amalgam (Friday's crushing); Venus Extended, 190oz amalgam; United Alpine, 3940z amalgam.
. Fiery Cross. —This company has a good quantity of amalgam, but cannot clean up owing to the berdans being unworkable. The return for the fortnight promises to be fully up to the average of the preceding week.
Inglewood.—This battery has been running for five clays, but no scraping will take place till next Saturday. Just in Time.—The return this week is rather below the average, the stuff put through being of a mullocky character. Next week's yield is, however, expected to show up better. The mine manager reports the reef in the low level to be a good four feet thick and to show fair gold. Reform.—The manager reports the winze to be down 36 feet, and the reef showing two feet thick, with very good gold. Lone Star.—This crushing was completed this morning, and the cleaning up is now in progress. The returns will not be in time to wire, but a yield of 2oz per ton is looked for. Welcome. —The return, though a splendid one, is not quite up to prediction. It is thought likely that a dividend will be declared at the end of this month. The amount guessed at is four shillings per share.
WAKATIPU MINING NOTES. (Fflon Our Own Cobeespondent.)
Arrow, August 21. News from the Phoenix is to hand speaking favourably of the main lode in No. 3 level, where coarse gold has been struck in unusual quantities. The electric apparatus is now working 25 heads, and it is expected that 30 will be in full work next week.
The Cosmopolitan mine (owned by Messrs Empen, Stackpoole, and Knight), Waipori, is turning out unexpectedly well (says the Tuapeka Times). Nine tons of stone was put through the Little Maud battery the other day, and from this was obtained 9oz of retorted gold. It will be remembered that the lease of this claim was abandoned some time ago, the original owners having lost the reef and two years' labour. The reef was recently found again, and h now being worked with the foregoing result.
