Malta, August 1,9. (Received August 20, at 3.10 p.m.) Frequent shocks of earthquake of a violent character have been experienced hero during the past 21 hours. Some alarm prevails.

Tho syndicate which undertook the construction of tlie Midland railway, Western Australia, will be formed info a company with a capital of £500,000. Half of the sharos will be issued immediately. A COPPER COMPANY. A committee of the English and Australian Copper Company has been advised that the capital should be written down to £I'lo,ooo. A proposal made to borrow £1)5,000 was adopted. The board of directors will resign in the middle of September.

The Mayor of Sydney has issued invitations to the Mayors of Australia, Tasmania, and New Zealand to take part in a municipal jubilee gathering, to be held here in October noxt.

New Zealand wheat is steady at is 5d per bushel; New Zealand oats are 2d lower, at 2sGdper bushel; maize, per sGlb, is at 2s sd, a decline of 8d during the week. Pollard and potatoes maintain last quotations. Sugar is unchanged.

The Colonial Treasurer introduced his Fnaneial Statement into the Legislative Assembly last night. He estimates the revenue for the year 188G-7 at £3,000,000, and the expenditure at £3,070,000. It is proposed to cover the deficit by increasing tlie ad valorem duties to 7 A per cent, and by levying succession duties.
