■'."■"■•-'■•'. •■' Saturday evening. We cannot report Miy improvement in business during the past week. While the fate of the financial proposals of , the Government ■ -was undecided, ■ neither holders nor buyers of the numerous lines -affected by the'proposed changes in the tariff were anxious" to do business tc any extent, and consequently transactions have been for the most part confined to purchases for the supply of actual requirements. Now, however, that the Protective proclivities: of the Ministry havp received a' severe check, and theHariff, with a few trifling exceptions, stands as it did before, trade miy revert to its former channel, and we anticipate an active demand for goods during the next week or two. Sugar maintains its firm position, and holders will not sell except/at their own prices. Snowdrops we quote £24 10s to £25 per ton; greys to fine whites, £22 10s to £24 per ton; yellows, £21 to £22 per ton. Teas are lightly held, and ara looked upon as good stock. Oh Friday next we shall publish our usual summary for transmission by San Francisco mail.

On Saturday, forenoon Messrs Wright, Stephenson,, arid" Co. submitted to auction a number of ■well-known racehorses belonging to Mr J. Cotton and others. The attendance at the sale was pretty large, but bidding was anything but brisk. Adamant was knocked down, at £50 to Mr Allison (who intends taking him over to Sydney); Larry £5, Mr James'Bair (South Dunedin); Mahomet, £15, Mr Wilkinson; Lizzy, £12, Mr J. Eenyon. Little John was passed in at £40.

Messrs A. and J. M'Farlane .have sold, to go to Melbourne, a yearling Ayrshire bull and three yearling heifers at highly satisfactory figures. The whole of. the animals are by the many-timed champion bull Teviot, now in Sydney, where he gained the champion prize at the last show. The young bull now sold claims as dam the whilom champion Ayrshire cow of Otago, Rosio Kinross, now also located in Sydney. Messrs M'Farlane lately sent to Blenheim a yearling bull by Teviot and a yearling heifer by Tarsus.—Oamaru Mail.
