A SKILFUL SURGICAL OPERATION.
aff
The American Ambassador at Vienna, Mr Kasaon, has lately forwarded to hia Oovernment an Interesting account of a remarkable surgical operation lately performed by Professor Billroth, of Vienna, which, wonderful to toll, consisted in the removal of a portion of the human stomach, involving nearly onethird of the organ; and, strango to say, tho patient recovered,—the only Buceeseful operation of the kind ever performed. The disease for which this operation was performed waa cancer of the stomach, attended with the following symptoms: - The appetite 13 quite poor. There Is a peculiar indescribable distress in tho stomach-a fooling that has been described aa a faint "all-gone" aensation; a sticky slime collects about the teeth, especially in the morning, accompanied by an unpleasant taste. Food fa la to satisfy this peculiar faint sensation; but, on the contrary, it appearß to aggravato the feeling. Tha eyes aro Bunken, tinged with yellow; the hands and feet become cold and sticky—a cold perspiration. The sufferers feel tired all the time, and sleep doea not soem to give rest. After a timo the patieut becomes norvoua and irritable, gleomy, hia mind filled (with ovil forebodings. When rising Buddenly from a recumbent position thero is a dizziness, a whistling sensation, and ho is obliged to gra-p something firm to keep from falling. The bowels costive, the Bkin dry aud hot at timea; the blood becoming thick and stagnant, and does uot circulate properly. After a time the patient spits up food soon after eating, sometimes in a sour and fermented condition, sometimes sweetish to the tasto. Often; times there ia a palpitation of the heart, and the patient feara he may hava heart disease. Towards tho la9t the patient ia unable to retiln any food whatever, as the opening in tho intestines becomes close, or nearly so. Although tho disease is Indeed alarming, sufferers with tho abnvenamed symptom! should not feel nervous, for nine hundred and ninetynine canes out of a thousand have no cancer, but simply dyspepsia—a dlseano easily removed if treated In a proper manner. Tho salost and best remedy for the disease is Seigel's Curative Syrup, a vegetable preparation sold by all chemists and medicine vendors, and by the proprietors, A J. White (Limited), Loudon, England; or the Wholesale Agents, Kempthorne, Proaier, and Co.'s Kew Zealand lirug Company (Ltd), Dunedin, Auckland, Chiiatchurcb, and Wellington. This Syrup strikes at the very foundation of tho disease, and driveß it, root and branch, out of the system.
