BENEVOLENT INSTITUTION COMMITTEE.
The ordinary meeting of the above Committee was held yesterday afternoon, and attended by Messrs Rennie (chairman), Ainger, Kirkpatrick, Sbaw, Captain Thomson, and General Irvine.
A single woman, who had been in the Hospital for 10 months suffering from a contracted leg, and was dismissed from the institution as incurable, applied for relief.—The Committee sugg9sted that she should go into the Asylum, and gave her a week to decide whether Bhe would or not. In the meantime, 5a was granted. At the request of the Rev. A. R. Fitchett it was decided to pay the passages of a missionary and his wife and seven children to Christohurch.
Relief was discontinued to a man who had complained of being unable to work through rheumatism, but who, it wai found, had in 10 weeks been able to earn £16 for cleaning railway-trucks. The sum of 7s 6dper week for a month was granted to a young married woman whose infant is dying, and whose husband is in the Hospital suffering from inflammation of the lungs. A woman wit'j seven children, whose husband is addicted to drink, and who was sent to gaol recently for wife-beating, asked that her rent should be paid.—lt was resolved to pay the rent (7s) for two months. The wife of a man who waß recently sentenced to eight years' imprisonment for an indecent offence upon a young girl applied for assistance. She has two youog children, but said she hoped to be able to earn something by needlework, &c. —The desirability of receiving her into the Institution was discussed, but it was pointed out that the crying of infants was very annoying to the old inmates, and it was decided ttf grant, her 103 a week for three months.
A young tailor, who has only been employed occasionally during the last four months, was granted 63 a week for a month. In several cases in which the Committee deemed the circumstances warranted assistance being given, relief was continued. Several cases were struck off the books. Two or three old persons were recommended te go into the Institution.
