SIR GEORGE GREY ON THE SITUATION.

[By Telegraph,]

(FROM OUR OWN COBBE3PONDENT.)

Auckland, July 27.

The Star says : " Sir George Grey is still in town, and is as yet in doubt whether he will return to Kawau before proceeding on bis sessional duties to Wellington. The hon. member for Auckland City East appears to be in excellent health and spirits, and he is very hopeful regarding tile prospects, of his "corner" party. In the course of an interview with a Star reporter to-day, Sir George stated that the numerical strength of his supporters in ths new Parliament haa- been underestimated by the newspapers that have. attempted to analyse lhe political leanings of' the newly-elected members. He is unable to give the names of all the men whose sympathies he counts on, but he mentioned as a instance of uncorrecthesa the classification of the members for the West Coast of the Middle Island, Sir George went on to stats that he has received communications from his friends in the South, and they aro of opinion that the outlook is very promising. The conversation then drifted into a discussion of the possibility of a coalition between the Grey section and Sir Julius Vogel or Major Atkinson. Regarding tho former proposition, Sir George said he was not in a position to speak on the matter.. He is unacquainted with the salient features of Sir Julius Vogel's policy, and has had no communication with the ex-Agent-genor'al since his return to the Colony. Then as to the prospects of a union with the followers of the hon. member for Egmont, Sir George seems to think that whatever chancea of a coalition may have existed before the general election, theso have been embarrassed by the action of the friends of the Government during the lato election. What tho future will be ia shrouded in completes* uncertainty, but he i thinks the probabilities are that the Ministry will go out. It appears probable that a meeting of the leading men opposed to Government will be held in Wellington immediately before tho opening of Parliament, at which it is poasible some plan of action will be decided on."
