THE TRADE IN WELLINGTON. (New Zealand Times, 20th in st.)
The lonic, which will leave thia afternoou, will take nearly 2000 carcasses of mutton, consigned by tho Gear Company, and which have been frozen on board the steamer. The same Company will also send by the Lady Jocelyn, ta sail at the end of this month, a shipment of 10,000 carcasses, most of which are already on board. The next steamer of the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company, tho Florida, will taka 5000 carcasses in a few days hence. These figures will give an idea of the increase of the local meat trade. The largest number of sheep ever killed in one day by the Gear Company—viz., 1400—were slaughtered at tho Petone works on Monday last. Thia largo slaughter is accounted for by the circumstance that two ships were loadiDg, and that all the sheep exported from Wellington in a fi'ozen state are killed at the Company's yards. To show that the trade in preserved moat is by no means being neglected, but, on the contrary, is in a very flourishing state, it may bo stated that 1000 cases of tinned meat will be taken by the Florida, in addition to 400 shipped by tho lonic. The last-mentioned steamer will also tako about 200 tons of tallow. The Wellington Moat Export and Freezing Company are also shipping; 4000 carcas9es_ by the lonic and 3000 by the Florida. This brings' the total up to 24,000 carcasses shipped withiu a fortnight from a single port in New Zealand. However, as this ia the most favourable season of the year, and as both companies have by this time gained considerable experience, it may be expected that these shipments will find a ready sale at remunerative prices.
