Ah some doubts have been expressed sxh to the promises made by the Government rospecting tho hearing of charges against seamen at Port Chalmers, wo have obtainod a copy of the exact answer sent to Mr Vincent Pyko in response to tho representations of tho Trades and Labour Council. It is as follows :—
Department of Justice, Wellington, December 21,1883. Sir,—l have the honour to acknowledge tho receipt of your letter ol the 14th inst. as to charges against seamen being heard btfjre Justices ot the Peace at Port Chnlmcrd, and in reply, to inform you that tho Kesitleut Magistrate atates that ho hm instructed the clerk ol the Court at Port Uhalmera lo get down for hearing on the diys that tho Resident Manlitrate viaitj Port Chalmers, whenever it can convcuitiiitly be done, cases 01 tho kind referred to.—l have, io., Thomas Dick. Vincent Pyke, Esq., M.H.R., Dunedin. It will be seen from the above that onjy extreme urgency will justify tho clerk in setting down "cases of the kind referred to" for hearing on days when the Resident Magistrate does not visit Port Chalmers.
