CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB. (Pkb United Pbess Association.) Christohubch, November 19. At a meeting of the Committee of the C. J.C. tonight a letter from R. Derritt was read, asking that his previous employers, Messrs Robinson and Laace, might be called upon to
give reasons for his summary dismissal just before the recent races. The Committee decided that the matter was not within their jurisdiction, and therefore they could not Interfere. The secretary read a report, showing that the receipts at the gate at last mooting were over £300 more than last year.
Acceptances for handicap, and entries for weight-fer-aga races at the D.J.O. Spring meeting must be made to tho secretary this evening by 8 o'oloek. The Ashburton Mail describes an imposition attemptod to be practised on the owners of the totalisators at the late race meeting held there. The winner of the totalisator stakes had No. 2 ou tho dial of Hobbs and Goodwin's machine allotted to the mare, and during the "payout " a smart youth presented a No. 2 ticket fur his share in the dividend—not a small amount by any means. Mr Goodwin's keen eye detected a fraud, and without much stir had the tickctholder arrested. On inquiry, it was ascertained that an accomplice had a losing ticket numbered 1, and immediately the result
of the stakes was made known cut a figure 2 out of a discarded ticket, and carefully gunomed it over the figure 1 on the ticket held by his mate. The latter without the slightest faint of guilt handed the " dark" card to Mr Goodwin, who, notwithstanding the rush of people for their dividends, made the discovery. It appears that the gentleman in question is a well-known visitor at race meetings, where he generally keeps his eye to business, with alleged invariable success. His game is now likely to be checked for some time. His accomplice escaped for the time being. After the day's racing Mr Goodwin discovered a " baited" ticket amongst the others.
