MINING

NOTES FROM REEFTON. [By TBLKORAPn ] (PROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

Rbefion, November 17, Tho aspect of affairs at present is rather gloomy in' tho stoak market, and general complaints are prevalent. Tho lato heavy calls have told upon investors generally, but somo Reefton holders of s'.ock who hevo sunk thoir all in scrip feel the dull markets seriously, as they no* and again are compelled to sacrifice some portion to moot tho demands upon tho remainder, of which they wish to retain possession in reasonable anticipation of good results eventuall , which the prospects of the field fully warrant. It must be admitted that some of the lato ventures have not as yot come up to expectations, but nevertheless patience must be exercised in mining as well as any other pursuit. Although the immediato outlook ia not brilliant, yet any experienced quartz-miner who is thoroughly conversant wi h the field cannot fail to predict a grand future for the Inangahua quartzßeld at no distant date. Some very promising undertakings are now being developed, and works genorally are progressing at a rate jo leave no roojajor_com(il«nt._ -OTWageYTlfnriTTs generally1 known that BlighSly inferior stone would have to be expected about that part of the mine which is now being operated upon. No alarm has taken place on this account, as may be 6een by the almost unaltered quotations. Energetic. - Only few hands are employed, and no

material change has taken place tince last crushing. Wealth of Wations— linking of the winze ia the Vulcan level is being proceeded with. No change, however, has occurred. Nil Despsrandum.—The No. 3 level has now been cleaned out, and tenders are invited for extending this level north. .

No 2 South Keep-it-Dark.—Prospecting here ia discontinued at present, pending airangement with an agricultural leaseholder of the adjointr ground for permission to bring up a drainage tunnel.

Golden Treasure.—The main crosscut Bhaft is now within 20ft of the survey point of intersection of reef. Thia point must be taken as approximate only, as tho underline might vary and throw the calculations out 20f tor more. The old workings are now cleared out of water after about a mouth's baling. On inspection of thia part of the mine it was found that all the timbers were sound aud no datnago had been dono during an immersion of nearly IS months. Tho additional crushing-power to the battery is just about finished. Pccanix Extended.—The Company invite tenders for driving 50ft in the intermediate Jevtl towards tho Inglewood ground, where tcme good stone has been followed north and south in the main level. Some of tho workmen of the contractors for the erection of the joint battery have been engaged building huts this week. All tho timber required for the work i-i delivered on tho machine site. The contractors for shoots and paddocks also have their timber ready. There is nothing new fo report from the Venus. The low level is approaching the underlie of the old winze.

Globe.- The crushing has boon continued regularly during the week, but the scraping- up will not take place this evtniug as usual. The directors state that the battery will not bo interrupted till tho 24th inst, when a general clearing up will bo made. Thi3 step, they say, was considered advisable in order to have as much ss possible milled before the date of the next general meeting of shareholders. Tbe second big boilor for the Inkerman passed Reefton to-day, on route for the machine site, where the contractors aro steadily at work.

Oriental.—A largo body of stone has been struck ia tho cross-cut from the main level which was started to cut the stone found lately in No. 2 stope. The dimensions of tho proseiit reef are not yet ascertained, as only one Bhot has been fired in it.

Steady progress is being made in the Specimen Hill mine in tho uprise now under construction. Tho erection of machinery is being pushed ahoad with all possible speed.

The Just-in-Time are still driving along the track ol a rtef from the joint drive.

Tho Imperial are extending the drive in hard ground. Vp till thia evening no change was reported.

Tho Hopeful started crushing on Thursday on a parcel of 150 tons.

The Fiery Cross are getting out stone for another crushing to commence next month. 'Ihe Welcome returns for the week are just in, and are 5200z amalgam from 75 tons.
