FIRE ALARMS.

TO THE EDITOB. Sib, Allow me to make, through the medium of your paper, a suggestion to the Bunedin City Council. There are at the present a number of alarm-boxes in various places of the city. I would suggest that the Council get a number of pieces of coloured glass with the following inscription: —" Nearest Fire Alarm, such and such a place, and fix these on' every street lamp in tho town; as, for instance, the lamp at the corner of Eattray and Princes streets would have the following, say, in white letters on red class as being most easily read:—"i ire Alarm, Post-office," and so forth. What brought this to- my mind was the late fire m Hanover street. I was one of the first to notice the fire, but being a stranger in that particular portion of the town I did not know where to go for the nearest alarm-box. By the time I eot to the station in King street the nre was nearly over. Now, had there been what I am suggesting, I only would have needed to direct my steps to the nearest lamp-post— always visible at night—and I would have soon known where to go for an alarm-box. But not only for a stranger, but also for a resident in that portion of the town where a fire broke out, would my suggestion be of value, because often people quite lose their heads, bo to speak, and in the excitement of the moment forget where the box is.

Hoping that the Council will sea their way clear to act on my suggestion, especially as it requires only a very small sum, and may, periiaps—nay, undoubtedly—be the means of puvinj? not only property but also life, —I am, &c,

Fire Aiarm,

November 10,

P.S.—There are several townß in England on the Continent where these (I call them) indicators are fixed in-the lamps.
