Thursday, September 13. (Before I. N. Watt, Esq., R.M.)

Dhu.vkexnkss. — Threo drunkards were fined.

Laboeni'. — Frederick William Llewellyn was charged with the larceny of a gold locket, value 30s, the property of Emanuel Piper, from the West Coast Hotel.—Detective Henderson asked for a remand, stating that there wast another man, also on remand, who was implicated in the larceny.—His Worship said that as the amendments in the Justices of the Peace Act had reached tho Court, the two accused had better be brought up, together.— Detective Henderson then asked that a remand should bo granted until the following day.— Accused objected to any remand.—After evidence bad been given by Detective Strathearn, accused was remanded until the following day, bail being allowed—accused in his own recognisanse of £10, and one surety of £10. Cbuklty to Animals.-* Isaac Ashton was charged with having on September 9 ill-treated a hen by breaking its legs.—Mr Stuart appeared for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and Mr £. Cook appeared for the defence.—Defendant, in his evidence, admitted throwing a stick at the fowl, which was trespassing in bis garden, but be had no intention of injuring it. —His Worship said he thought this was not a case contemplated by the Act, Defendant bad no intention of injuring the fowl; he simply wished to get rid !of it from his ground, and prevent it going back again. The information would be dismissed.

Civil Case.—J. H. Richards v. Tho Master and Owners of s.s. Shag.—Claim £14, wages duo.—Mr Fitchett appeared for the plaintiff, and Mr Stout for the defendants. —According to the plaintiff's statement, it appeared that he was originally engaged as master of the s.s. Shag at a salary of £16 per month, About four months ago the men were paid off, and the boat placed on the slip for repair. Subsequently a new arrangement was made, by which plaintiff was engaged as master in the rivor trade at £14 per month, ho being told the boat would run for six months. In tho end of July the boat was laid up and all hands paid off except witness, who did not receive any notice. He unbent the Bails and stowed the gear, and kept the boat in order during August. He put in his month's claim, which was refused.—Cross-examined: i\e was working on shaves as well as on a wage. At the beginning of July ho waß not told that the boat would lay up at the end of the month, but he was told that she might lay up. £14 a month was guaranteed.—To the Bench: He was to have a commission on the profits after all expenses had been paid.—Mr Stout submitted that plaintiff had been dismissed. It was absurd to Bay that a vessel when laid up wanted a captain-to look after it.—Henry Guthrie, managing owner of the Shag, stated that the arrangement was that plaintitf was to work tha boat on shares. The captain and the engineer were guaranteed '£14 each per month. Two-tbirds of the earnings were to go to the ship for disbursements, aud one-third to the owners. On August 1, after the boat bad been laid up, witness paid plaintiff his wages. Plaintiff stated that everything had been placed below. He did not know until the account was submitted to him that 'plaintiff bad been near the boat during the month.— After hearing further evidence his Worship dismissed the case.

Affiliation.—George Dunn, of Balclutha, was charged with failing to contribute towards tbe maintenance of an illegitimate child, of which ha was the putative father. —Mr Fitchett appeared to prosecute —The accused did not appear.—After hearing the evidence of-the mother and a relalisn, his Worship made an order for the payment of 8a per week'by tho accused.
