A PROTEST. TO THE EDITOR.

Sib,—l think, Mr Editor, that you and Mr Stout are dealing very hardly with my old and valued friend Mr Cargill. You are playing the very Punch with hia Mrs Judy—that is, you stroke him affectionately and reverently with one hand, and then suddenly knock him flat with the other. Now this sort of thing cannot be allowed. I was at the sale, and, with others, lost myself in admiration of the conscious rectitude with which Mr Cargill bore himself. Four thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine ordinary agents out of 5000 would have felt themselves in a doubtful position after the rumours current in tswn previous to the sale. Not so my subject. Firm in the conviction that no man of woman born would have tho temerity to attempt to put him to base uses, he stood there, and felt he was indeed what Mrs Ciesar ought to have been. Even the stupidity and apathy of his constituents (who, feeling themselves in good hands, would go to sleep just as the crisis of their lives had arrived) did not disconcert him. Why should it ? Was not Mr Harlow there with his pole to stir them up when wanted ? And now to hint that the whole thing was a put-up job I Why, the suggestion is to be treated with scorn, and if Mr Cargill takes my advice ho will rely on his well-known character for respectability and integrity, and treat the attacks mads upon him with silent contempt. —I am, &c; Hands Off the Auk. j)unodin, March 29th.-
