(Before B. H. Carew, Esq., R.M., and J, Logan, Esq., J.P.) " Obscene Language.—Bridget K. Bellett was fined 10s, in default 48 hours' imprisonment, for using obscene language in a right-of-way in Walker street,

Nkglkctkd Children. — Jane (7 years), Joseph (5), Margaret (3), and Joseph Weir (9 months), were charged with being neglected children. The mother appeared in Court in charge of her children, her husband having left her six weeks ago.—The police stated that she was given to drink, and being unable to support her children, had turned thorn out in

the streets.—His Worship said it was a serious matter for him to commit the children to the Industrial School, for under the new Act they were likely to remain there and to be a burden to tho State till they arrived at the age of 15. He thought the police should mike inquiries regarding the whereabouts of the father.—Sergeant Bevin: And what is to become of tho children in the meantime, your Worship?— His Worship: Is there not a Benevolent Institution? —Sergeant Bevin: Yes; but they will not take in such cases as these. I have tried them again and again.— His Worship : I always understood that the Institution was for the relief of destitute persons ?—Sergeant Bevin: Yes; but they will not afford relief in cases where drink has been the cause of the misfortune.—The case was adjourned till next Tuesday, in order tnat the police might make inquiries as to the whereabouts of the father of the children.

An- Incoruigiblb Character, — Annie Evans, an old grey-headed woman, apueared before the Bench on a charge of using obscene language. She was apparently under the influence of liquor, and caused considerable amusement by the manner in which she addressed the Bench. She pleaded guilty.— Sergeant Bevin stated that the accused was hardly over sober, and her husband now asked that tho full penalty provided for by tho Act be Imposed.—Accused was sent to gaol for three months. (Before J. Logan, Esq., J.P.)

Stealing Boot.s.—Edward Hughes was charged with being an accessory to the stealing of 31 pairs of boots from the shop of William Wilson, Great King street, on the 2nd inst.— Detective Henderson prosecuted, and Mr F. R. Chapman appeared on behalf of the accused.—The informant Wilson gave evidence regarding the theft of the boots. He stated that his shop had been broken into on the night of the 2nd, when the boots were abstracted. —Mr Chapman contended, after the Mitness had been examined, that there was no evidence against his client.—The Bench was of the same opinion, and dismissed the case.

Au adjourned meeting of this Presbytery was held at Alexandra on the 22nd inst. Sedorunt—Rev. Moßsra Blackie, Telford, and Lothian (ministers), Mr William Hanson (elder), Mr John M'Kenao (older), Alexandra, being preeeut, was associated. The missionary at Lauder, Mr J. A. Norrie, was also present.

Tho Ebv. R. Telford was elects moderator For the ensuing torui.

The Presbytery haTing heard report on Lauder district, it was intimated from the convener of the Church Extension Committee that an offer of the übo of Lauder Station fc? two years, as a minister's residence, had been made by Mr Roberts (of Handyside and Koberts), and also that the first available probationer would be sent to the district.—After consideration, it was agreed to record the following deliverance:—" That the Presbytery express their satisfaction with Mr Nome's report and labours, and rejoice that the cause of Christ iB prospering in Lauder district, and that the foundations of a thriving charge are being laid there. Further, that the Presbytery, on behalf of the district and of the Church, very specially record their thanks to Mr Koberts for his handsome offer of the use of Lauder Station for two years, and accept the same, in the firm belief that it will be the means of giving the district an immense advantage in its outset as a new charge, and that this act of liberality will greatly encourage the people in all their efforts. The Presbytery also hope that the Church Extension Committee will not fail to send probationers to the district, so that at no distant date the Presbytery may be called upon to officiate at the harmonious settlement of a permanent mini/!' ter."

It was agreed to appeint. the Hey. Messrs Lothian and Blackio a committee to confer with the people of Wanaka and Hawea in reference to securing site for Church purposes} and also to ascertain whether the district is prepared to take «teps towards obtaining the services of a resident missionary, Mr Lothian gave notice of overtures regarding Book of Prayers for lay readers, and in reference to an endowment fund for church extension purposes. ' Remits of Synod were deferred till September meeting. A grant for repairs to Teviot manse wan sanctioned.

The clerk was instructed to invite the Rev, Mr Drake to the meetings of Presbytery. The Presbytery then adjourned to meet at Ophir in September.
