Trespassing on the Railway. was charged with on the Mth'ult. trespassing on the railway-line between; the Pelichet Bay and Dunedin stations.—Alexander Gairand John Connor gave evidence as, tothe trespass ; and the inspector.deposed as to the situation of the line, which passed pyer-ft piece of land which had formerly, been khowh; as Beach street, but had never been formed,—The defendant explained that he leased land in the vicinity from the Corporation, .and regarded Beach street as the proper access to his premises'. He had no idea that he was trespass-ing-—Under these circumstances,! the -Bench imposed a nominal fine of Is, without costs. Neglected Child.—Mary Ann Murphy, an infant, was brought before the Court as a. neglected child.^lnspectorWeldoh stated that in this case the child waß illegitimate; the father had left the Colony, and the mother was; unable to support 'it'. —The Bench suggested that application might be made to'the Benevolent Asylum authorities, yriio'would probably consent to pay half the cest of: the child's maintenance. , If'this was refused, the case might again be broughtbeforie the Courts—The mother decided to adopt this course. .-, ' Frauds on Tradesmen;— George iiuckhurst pleaded guilty to three separate charges* of obtaining goods under "false-pretences at South Dnnedin, v The offences consisted of obtaining oats, chaffj and "hay, to the, value of 18s, on the representation of. the accused that he was in the. employ of a horsedeaier in & neighbouring province; alsoa'sumibf 15s, and goods to the .value 0f.;12s :2d,Jon >the. pretence • that he war about' ito bejm'arriea;—lnspector Weldoh stated, that: :a,.cbarge..:Qf. vagrancy against the accused had • been withdrawn to enable the. Bench better tbLdeal'with these cases. The frauds'were of-a-moßt impudent character; —The Bench sentenced the accused to two months' imprisonment, with hard labour, on each charge,, the sentences to be accumulative, upon'a. term he was at present undergoing for a similar offence.
