LICENSING COURTS.
DUNEDIN CENTRAL. The Licensing Court for Dunedin Central sat at the Police Court yesterday, the Commissioners present being Messrs Gore (chairman), Leslie, and J. Donaldson.
A transfer of the license of Bayley's Hotel from Archibald M'Master to Walter Edward Carmalt was granted.
A transfer of a bottle license from George Simpson to Hugh Crawford was also granted. This was all the business transacted. ■ . ST. KILDA PARK.
The quarterly meeting of St. Kilda Park Licensing Committee was held yeßterday, when there wera present Messrs Gourley, Ings, and Allan.
After the minutes of the-' previous special meeting had been read and confirmed, the police report was read and approved of, and the police in charge of the district were thanked by the Chairman, in the name of the Committee, for the able manner in which they had carried out their duties.
Mr G. L. Kingston applied for a Colonial wine license for his premises at the Saltwater Baths, Sandhills, but after discussion the Committee agreed to allow. Mr Kingston to withdraw his application with leave to apply again, as they held that they had no power to grant any new licenses except at the annual licensing meeting in June. The application was withdrawn accordingly. William Halligan, licensee of the Pioneer Hotel, applied for an extension of the time of his license, under, the Amendment Act of •18S2, until 11 p.m. A vigorous opposition was raised by the paliee, and the Chairman in the course of his remarks said that a poor publican was compelled in Dunedin to shut up on Sundays altogether, and on week-days at 10 p.m. sharp ; whereas a rich man, with thousands at
his command, could do what he chose-'-either on Sundays or week-days. That was not the way to administer the law. He did not believe in any monopoly, and if the Government of the. Colony made a law it should be administerd fairly and justly. The other members of the Committee coincided with the chairman's opinion, and the application was granted.
