HAWKE'S BAY JOCKEY CLUB RACES,

(Per United Pbess Association.)

Napier, October 3rd. The Jockey Club's Spring meeting to-day was very successful. The weather was tine, though windy, and there was a large attendance. Good fields mustered, and there were several close finishes. There were two tetalisators on the ground, but their working gave great dissatisfaction. The machinery of one was so defective that it had to be closed, and it was alleged that the other several times gave false registers in the totals. They are Dunedinmade machines, locally owned. The results were as follow ;— lIAWKE'S BAY GUINEAS, Of lOfi soys, with a sweep of 5 soys for each acceptors added. Colts and geldings, Bat 101b ; fillia-, Bat . 51b. One milo. At the back of the course Carmen bolted, and Kingask went to the front. They ran in this order until entering the straight, when Rangipo challenged the leader* but after an exciting finish Kingask passed the post half a-length in advance. Time, 1 mm. 52 sec. Page's Morning Star (list 31b), Bloomfield's Tartar (list 21b), Donnelly's Ruahino (list), and Stock's Lone Hand (12st 51b) also started. This was a very hollow affair. Lone Hand fell at the first hurdle, unseating his jockey. Tartar soon assumed the command, but he ran round the third hurdle and was out of it. Rua; hine next persistently refused, and the race was thus reduced to a match between Morning Star and A. G. The former had a good lead at the last hurdle, and the Star came down, leaving A. G. to canter in; SPRING HANDICAP, Of 200sovs. One mile and shall. Mr Percy Martin's b m Mavis, 6 yrs, Git 81b .. 1 Mr Allan M'Leau's eh f Louie, 4 yrs, Bat .. * Mr A. A bad dismissal saw Mavis first away, with all the rest close up, except Lone Hand and Otupai, who were outpaced. Priam took the lead at the half-mile, to yield to "Virginia Water a little farther on, Louie taking second place. On entering the straight Mavis came up very fast, and a magnificent race between the trio resulted in Mavis winning by a head. Time, 2 mm. 46J sec. TRIAL PLATE, Of 30 soys. Half a mile.
