Auckland, September 22nd. By the Advance, tidings have been received of a tire breaking out on the schooner Transit, lying at Karotonga. The vessel was partly scuttled, and cargo damaged by tire or water of the value of £1000. The loss is covered by insurance in tlie New Zealand (Mice. The Transit is now daily expected here.
The Tramway Company applied for an extension of time from 14 to IS minutes for the running of the tramways, but the Council refused to alter the conditions of the contract. The steward of the Mendiw.ii, who was believed to be drowned four months ago, and for whose body the police dragged the harbour, turned up in town to-day, to the astonishment of people, having been in the bush.

Wellington, September 22nd,
One of Wellington's pioneer settlers, Mr William Kllerslie Wallace, died rather suddenly at Otaki last night. Mr Wallace was one of the New Zealand Company's settlers, and arrived in the Colony in 1840, at Nelson. Joseph Rigby, a settler residing in the Tadmove district, was killed yesterday while bushfalling.

There are no tidings of the misssing man Winter, and a large party are to start on Sunday to continue the exploration of the hills.
Timaru, September 22nd. Alexander M'Bratney, a very old resident in this district, committed suicide at Arowhenua this morning by shooting himself under the armpit. He was married to a second wife only a few days ago. No cause is assigned for the deed. Mr James Bruce's new rlourinills were formally opened to-day. All the machinery has been imported direct from the United States. The mill consists of six storeys, is 75 feet high to the bed of the roof, and its dimensions are 118 feet by 74 feet. It is estimated to turn out 400 sacks of flour per day, besides oatmeal, barley &c. It is believed to be the largest and most complete mill in the Colony.
Oamabu, September 22nd. Mr John Hardy, an old resident, and at one time a member of tliS Provincial Executive, died to-day, at the age of 62. A temperance entertainment, at which Mr M. W. Green read the connective story, was attended by the largest audience ever assembled here.
