RUNS 171 a AND 171b, TO THE EDITOR.

Sib, —I have read with much interest Mr Mason's. letter upon the above runs in the vicinity of Palmerston and Waikouaiti, and desire to endorse his statements. There are, I know, men 'in Dunedin who would like to obtain a few hundred acres of this country on account of its proximity to town, and who have quite as much right to be consulted as Palmerstou or any other place. Although it may not suit us to take Up a deferred-payment section on account of having to reside upon it, it would suit us to buy for cash a section of say 1000 or 1500 acres. Why, I ask, should we be debarred from doing so ? Eor those wanting deferred payment land the Board has already provided. There are tens of thousands-of acres to be offered .in that manner. This province appears to me to be intoxicated over deferred payments, and when purchasers como to their senses they immediately appeal to the Minister of Lands for relief. The report furnished by Messrs Green and Clark upon the above country is one that ought to meet with the approval of all. They have classified .the land in such a way that all may obtain-what they require, and it will be manifestly unjust to them and to the^'country if the Land Board truckles to the irresponsible'statements of such men as Mr Eraser of Palmorston, Mr Brunton of Merton.—l am, &c, * '
