LICENSING MEETINGS

LEITH DISTRICT.

,The adjourned meeting of the Committee for thfe district was held at the City Police Court yesterday morning. Present—Messrs J. Alleu (in the chair) G. E. EHott, ,T. Barnes, and J. Mathews. ■ :

F. T. Hamer, Wain's Royal Hotel.—Mr Harvey appeared in support of the application, and stated that the house was in good repair and properly furnished.—The police offered no opposition.—The Chairman said that the license would be granted, but the Committee, after inspecting the building, were of opinion that it was high time it came down. If the same committee -were upon the bench next year, in all. probability the license would be refused unless a new building was put up. 'DUNEDIN SOUTH. ■ This Committee also met in the Police Court yesterday morning. Present — Messrs Jas. Gore (in the chair), J. Allen, G. E. Eliott, and W. P. Street.

Mr F. R. Chapman appeared to support the application of R. T. Waters for a transfer of the license of the Prince of Wales Hotel. The application had been adjourned for the substitution of another name for that of Aaron Woolf. That of William Eames was now submitted, and the transfer was granted. With respect to the application of Peter D. Young for a license for the Golden Age Hotel, the Chairman stated that after inspection the Committee were not of opinion that the house was a desirable one to receive a license. As i the proprietor had, however, done his best to put it in repair, the license would be granted, but it would not be renewed next year for the same building. Mr Callan appeared to support'tho application for a transfer of tho license of the Royal Hotel from Thomas Cornish to Geo. Nelson. The applicant, it appeared, was insolvent, and the Committee questioned their power to issue 4 a license to him under these circumstances. Mr Callan submitted that there was nothing in the Act to prevent this, as provision was made in such case for the business to be carried on by the trustee. The moment the license was granted it became an asset in the* estate, and was vested in the trustee.—The' latter then applied for a license to carry on the business for a certain period.—The Committee expressed, themselves still in doubt on the matter, and adjourned the application for a week. DUNEDIN CENTRAL. This Committee held their adjourned meeting at the Police Court yesterday. Present—Messrs Jas.Gore (in the chair), W. P. Street, J. Donaldson, and G. Leslie. The Chairman said that before proceeding to business it was, he thought, desirable that notice should be taken of a letter that appeared in the Otago Daily Times signed by Henry J. Walter. The speaker did not generally answer newspaper correspondence, but as the writer in this case was a man having experience in public -business, and having been three times Mayor, it was possible the letter might carry undue weight with a section of the public. Mr Walter complained that Wain's. Hotel did not receive the same caution as his did—in fact he complained that he was ; singled out for a special purpose; He (the speaker) was sure the Com--1 mittee would bear him'out when he said that that was not correct, Mr Walter was very unhappy in drawing comparisons between Wain's Hotel and the Occidental. The speaker then referred to numerous differences that had existed between the two buildings, and especially instanced the superior means of exit provided in Wain's Hotel to that existing in ■ the Occidental. He characterised the exit in I case of a fire in the wooden portion of the Occidental as simply a man-trap. In conclusion he said that if the statements made by Mr Walter concerning three |of the committeemen were true, then those men were totally unfit to hold the position they did; but the | statements were not true, for the Committee j were unanimous in giving expression to their remarks. .

The application of Henry M. Mills for a license for the Australasian Hotel was granted the Chairman remarking that the building, although*old, was in good repair, and had°a splendid exit in case of fire. The Committee, however, would strongly recommend'that a new building be erected.
