CITY POLICE COURT.

Monday, 6th March.

J.P's.) Dkuxkenness.— Seven oases of drunkenness were disposed of. Charges op Assault.—John Jackson, alias Patrick Sumott, 17 years of a^e was charged with having • assaulted Constable 0 Jseill whilst in the execution of his duty on the 4th inst.—The constable stated that at half-past 6 p.m. :on Saturday he saw the accused in the company of some other men in Bond street. A woman was with them, and knocked her down and began kicking her: Witness gavb chase to him as ho ran away on observing a constable approaching; but when caught and brought back the woman refused to lay an information, as she was intimidated by the crowd. Accused then assaulted witness, biting him and kicking violently. — The accused's mother was present in Court, and asked the Bench to deal leniently with him, as he washer only support.—The Bench, taking the age of the accused into consideration, and the fact of its being his first offence, contented themselves with inflicting a fine of £1, or in default 24 hours' imprisonment. —.— John M'Cormick was charged, on the information of his wife (Kate M'Cormick), with havin» assaulted her on the 28th nit. It was alleged by complainant that the assault took place in front of the Xformal School,' where defendant struck her in the face with his fist.—ln crossexamination she admitted that she often went home intoxicated, and from the statements of ■both parties it appeared that the life they led was a very unhappy one.—The Bench considered that there was insufficient evidence, to convict the defendant, and dismissed the case, commenting severely upon tba relations existing between the couple.
