PORT CHALMERS TOWN COUNCIL.

A special meeting of the Council was held on-. Monday evening. Present—His Worship tha Mayor (Air W. Innes), Crs Dodson, Allen. Perry, Chick, Morkane, M'Kenzie, ' andf"' Ritchie.

The meeting was convened for the purpose ■ of meeting Messrs Elder and M'Kcnzie, to ■ make arrangements for the future supply of: gas to the town. . Cr Morkane proposed, and Cr M'JKenzie: seconded—" That the term of lease be 21 years at a rental of £5 annually for the first five' years, £20 for the second five years, and an advance of £10 every successive five years until the end of the term. The Corporation to be at liberty to purchase the plant and business at any time they may wish to do so, the price to be arranged by arbitration. The lessee to have the sole right to supply gas to the town. The quality of gas to be equal to that supplied to the city of Duuedm, or not less than 10-candle power; the lessee to charge at the rate of £— per "i-300 cubic feet for gas supplied to ratepayers, with a disqotmt of 2o per .cent, to ail consumers who pay their gas-bills before the 12th of the month—the Corporation agreeing to light nofc fewer than 12 lamps at the rate of £9 per lamp rand to increase that number as often as their funds will permit and it is thought reouisite ; the lessees to lay pipes at their cost "to the building-line for consumers; on the expiry of the term the lease to be put up at auction, but compensation for all plant and. business to be allowed as against an incoming tenant." Cr Dodsox moved the following amendmenti—".That the Lighting Committee, with tho. Mayor,.wait on Mr Genevor and cocsult him re the leasing of the gasworks site, and procure specifications for the works." The amendment was not seconded. The following councillors voted for the motion :-Crs Ritchie, Chick, Morkane, and MKenzie. . Against it:—Ora Dodson and Perry. .... , , ; . Cr Allen refused ta vote. '

On the motion of Cr Mobkane, seconded by Cr Chiok, Mr Elder was invited to hear tho conditions read.

This done, and Sir Elder having replied, Cr M'Kexzie moved, and Cr RitchiS seconded—" That the; blank in the draft conditions of lease be filled up by Mr Elder and that the Council accept the terms if they consider them reasonable." .'..' . .-..■■*

Cr Dodson moved as an amendment—"That the meeting adjourn, to giveths counciUors further tune to consider the gas question " rhere bemg no seconder to the amendment, the motion was carried on the votes of Gi4 Mcn-kane, Ritchie, M'Kenzio, CWck. Cr Allen did not vote on this question. Cr M'lCmiE moved, and Cr Ritohie Eieoonaed— That Mr Elder's terns be accepted by the Council."—Carried, - At this stage of the proceedings Cra Dodson. Perry, and Allen left the table. Cr jM'Kkk?ie moved, and Cr CnicKaeoonded—" That the Corporation solicitor be instructed to prepare a lease in accordance with the terms agroed upon by the.
