THE ROSLYN ELECTION. TO THE EDITOR.
Sir, —It is publicly stated, and not contradiotod, that on tho evo of tho oloction a message was sent by tho priests to the Roman Catholic electors of Roslyn instructing thorn to vote for Mr Bathgato.. Now it must have been noticed by all thoße who attended Mr Bathgato's meetings that ho persistontly shirked tho question as to whether 10 would vote for Government aid to Roman Catholic schools, and, in fact, that he would make no pledges on this matter. It would bo satisfactory to tho electors if Mr Bathgate would just reply categorically to the following questions, without further attempting to burk inquiry as to his opinions:—l. Had Mr Bathgato any intorview on the subject of the eloction with any priost or other person professing to reprosent the Roman Catholic electors? 2. Was any promise, either expressed or implied, made by him to. support a grant to Roman Catholic schools ? '3. Was any understanding established that thoßoman Catholic vote should bo influenced in his favour ? Mr Bathgate's distinct and definite replyto these questions is respectfully asked for the information of a large number of the Roslyn electors. —I am, &c, Elecio«, Dunedin, December 12th.
